Kentucky Derby 2012: Why I'll Have Another Has No Chance at Triple Crown
I'll Have Another, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, pulled off a fantastic upset at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
The three-year-old chestnut colt trained by Doug O'Neill was able to catch Bodemeister down the stretch, then hold off Dullahan for the final few furlongs, posting a final time of 2:01.83
At $32.60, I'll Have Another awarded risk-taking bettors substantially.
However, the horse and jockey will not be able to win the triple crown, or either of the next two races.
The No. 19 horse had a magnificent start to the race, as Gutierrez did a great job of taking the horse back without having to force him to do so.
I'll Have Another is fast, but he's not fast enough to compete with Bodemeister at the Preakness on a shorter track. Had the course been one-16th-of-a-mile shorter, like the track at Pimlico Race Course is, Bodemeister would have been able to hold on for the victory.
He's not fast enough to compete with Dullahan on a longer track either, as Gutierrez was barely able to hold off Kent Desormeaux who is Dullahan's jockey. The Belmont Stakes is quarter-of-a-mile longer than the Kentucky Derby. That quarter mile would have given Dullahan enough time to continue the furious charge which resulted in a third-place finish.
I'll Have Another was given 15-1 race-time odds. That's no surprise seeing as Gutierrez is a rookie jockey and I'll Have Another is an unproven horse. Before today's victory, the duo had only emerged victorious in one grade one thoroughbred race, which came at the Santa Anita Derby on April 7.
Bodemeister will definitely be the favorite at Pimlico, especially without Trinniberg on the track to match his speed. Bodemeister's jockey, Mike Smith, has proven that he is one of the premier riders in the sport time and time again.
Don't expect I'll Have Another's next two races to result in a storybook ending like his Run for the Roses did.
