2012 Kentucky Derby Contenders: Long Shots to Bank on at Churchill Downs
Although the betting odds may lead you to believe otherwise, every horse at the Kentucky Derby is a serious contender.
Unlike most major sporting events, long-shot winners are very common at the legendary race. For evidence of this, look no farther than 2009 and 2005 when Mine That Bird and Giacomo won despite facing 50-to-1 odds.
So which horses will follow in their hoof steps this year? Here are your best options to bet on.
Take Charge Indy (10/1)
With super-jockey Calvin Borel on his back, Take Charge Indy is a major threat to take home the roses today.
Borel has won the Kentucky Derby three times (2007, 2009, 2010), so you certainly shouldn't be surprised if he orchestrates another flawless race.
Take Charge Indy isn't as much of a long shot after being listed at 15-to-1 odds in the morning, but he's definitely worth throwing some money on.
Done Talking (31/1)
Other than a disappointing finish in the Gotham Stakes, Done Talking has had a solid career thus far. He's finished fourth or better in six of his seven career races, and I wouldn't be surprised if he adds another top finish to his list at the Derby.
He's very good at maneuvering through traffic, which will be key down the stretch. At the current 31-to-1 odds, I really like Done Talking in this race.
El Padrino (26/1)
El Padrino is a long shot to win, but he's in a great starting position. He'll be starting the race from slot 16, which has produced four Derby winners since 1995, including fellow underdogs Thunder Gulch and Charismatic, as well as last year's winner Animal Kingdom.
Don't be surprised if El Padrino wins bettors some big bucks today.
