Mayweather vs Cotto: Floyd Speaks Truth Telling Cotto He's No Easy Task
Trash talking is a big part of selling a boxing match and Floyd Mayweather does it about as well as anyone in the sport today.
So when we hear Floyd firing off about something or other, we typically have to take his words with a grain of salt.
For once "Money" May is justified in his response to Miguel Cotto's coach saying he "wasn't impressed" with Floyd's fighting style.
BoxingScene.com quotes the undefeated fighter saying:
""I'm not Antonio Margarito, I'm not Yuri Foreman. He's facing Floyd Mayweather. This is a little different. I don't want them to remotely put in his mind that this is going to be an easy task. I don't think he thinks this is going to be an easy task."
"
Cotto's last few years have been littered with intriguing storylines. He lost rival Antonio Margarito in the "loaded gloves" bout, then won the vacant WBO welterweight title before losing it to Manny Pacquiao three fights later.
The beating he took at the hands of Pac-Man was ugly, and he followed up that loss with fights against the likes of Yuri Foreman, Ricardo Mayorga and avenged the loss to a one-eyed Margarito.
For once, Mayweather is in the right telling Cotto's camp that this is "a little different."
For all Floyd's talking, antics and controversies, he's an unbeaten fighter who is not only difficult to hit, but to touch. He can fire off punches in rapid succession and he'll beat fighters with technique and patience if that be the case.
He showed in his last fight, a controversial knockout of Victor Ortiz, that giving him even the slightest opening is a mistake.
Cotto lasted 12 rounds with Pacquiao by running around after getting hit early. He's matured some since that fight, but he still wants to get in there and brawl more often than not. He's going to get frustrated with Floyd and he's going to open up a time too many.
People look at this as a big fight with Cotto coming off the win over Margs, but it's not—the Puerto Rican fighter isn't in the same class as Mayweather.
Don't be surprised when this fight disappoints.
