Kentucky Derby 2012 Post Positions: Which Horses Lucked Out?
The 138th Run for the Roses is finally here. In what is considered to be the most exciting two minutes in sports, a horse could have a major advantage simply because of his post position.
There are many factors that play into a horse winning, such as weather, travel distance and the jockey themselves, but the deciding factor could simply be post position.
Historically, 90 wins have come from the first 10 gates, which would lead one to believe anyone past the 10th gate doesn’t stand a chance. However, that theory was disproved last year when Animal Kingdom won the race from the No. 16 post.
For the favorites to win the race, a bad post position can ruin their chances. Likewise, an underdog may have their chances drastically improved from simply lucking out.
Most of the time, certain post positions and horses are perfect matches because the position fits the horses’ ability perfectly. Like any year, there are a few horses who lucked out and found posts that suit them this year.
Let’s take a look.
Gemologist
Gemologist landed in a perfect spot at the No. 15 post position this year. The position fits the horses’ needs ideally since there won’t be much speed to the outside for Gemologist to have to deal with.
Historically, the No. 15 spot is great for Gemologist as well. It has produced four wins since 1984, which should only further the chances of Gemologist winning.
As long as Gemologist’s jockey utilizes the horse's abilities correctly, it won’t be shocking to see the horse win the race without much contention.
Dullahan
Dullahan landed in the absolutely best spot possible, given the horses’ abilities. The No. 5 position could allow Dullahan to make a late run at winning the race.
Being at the fifth post position means the race is slightly shortened, which is a great thing considering Dullahan is arguably the best closer in the race. Starting there also means the horse will likely not have to get lost in a crowd.
Dullahan, like Gemologist, wouldn’t shock anyone by winning thanks to outstanding post position.
Take Charge Indy
Jockey Calvin Borel is no stranger to running on the rail at Churchill Downs.
He and Take Charge Indy now find themselves with the No. 3 post position, which is something that could ultimately lead to a surprise victory for the duo.
Familiarity is everything for a jockey. Borel being a three-time winner of the race also helps. Take Charge Indy is a powerful horse that, with the right direction from Borel, could end up being the shocking winner this year.
