Michigan Football: A Look at Where Their Top Draft Prospects Landed in the NFL

Austin FoxMay 1, 2012

Unfortunately, Michigan only had a handful of prospects in this year's NFL draft who had a realistic shot of being drafted.

With that being said, a number of Wolverines who weren't selected have already been signed as free agents by NFL teams.

Here's a look at where Michigan's top-five prospects landed and what caused them to land where they did.

5. Kevin Koger

Kevin Koger was looked at as a potential draft pick as recently as a month-and-a-half ago, but things quickly took a turn for the worst.

On March 22, Koger tore his Achilles tendon while doing Plyometrics.

He had surgery on March 27 and will endure a five- to eight-month rehabilitation period.

Not only was Koger not drafted, but he hasn't been signed as a free agent either.

Considering the circumstances, I guess it's not surprising. After he fully recovers, there is no reason Koger still can't go on to have a career in the NFL.

4. Ryan Van Bergen

Going into the draft, Van Bergen was looked at as a virtual tossup on whether or not he would get drafted.

Things seemed to be especially positive when the Texans told him they were looking at him with their sixth-round pick, but that changed quickly when they drafted Whitney Mercilus and Jared Crick in earlier rounds.

Van Bergen did end up going undrafted, but wasn't without a team for long. Soon after the draft ended, the Panthers came calling, and Van Bergen chose to sign with them.

3. Junior Hemingway

Going into the draft, Hemingway was looked at as someone who would definitely get drafted, mainly because of his prototypical body type. Standing 6'1" and weighing 225 pounds, an NFL team would surely take interest in him.

However, he ended up going in the seventh round (238th overall) to the Chiefs, a bit lower than most people expected.

We've seen a number of Michigan receivers find success in the NFL over the last few years (Manningham, Edwards, Avant, Breaston, etc.), and hopefully Hemingway will find success as well.

2. David Molk

4 of 6

Just like Hemingway, Molk was definitely looked at as someone who would get drafted and could potentially even go somewhere in the middle rounds.

However, like Koger, injuries caused Molk's draft stock to plummet. He tore his peroneal longus in the Sugar Bowl, limiting him to only one activity at the combine. That one event was the bench press, where Molk was able to do 41 reps—the second most of any player at the entire combine.

However, his injury still scared teams off for the most part, as he fell all the way to the seventh round, much lower than most projected him.

The Chargers took him 226th overall, just 12 spots ahead of Junior Hemingway.

1. Mike Martin

5 of 6

Heading into the draft, Mike Martin was, without a doubt, looked at as Michigan's best pro prospect.

Mid- to late-second round was a slight possibility for Martin, although that was probably being very optimistic.

He ended up going in the third round (82nd overall), right about where he was projected.

Although it was only the third round, the Titans got a steal in Mike Martin.

Even though none of these Wolverines got drafted, they have all signed with NFL teams already:

Michael Shaw—Redskins

Troy Woolfolk—Cowboys

Brandon Herron—Buccaneers
