Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto: Money May Must Make Most of Fight
There would appear to be a newfound sense of urgency about Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his camp of handlers and promoters.
However, it seems to have more to do with what comes after his upcoming fight against Miguel Cotto, rather than the bout itself.
Mayweather will serve a 90-day jail sentence that begins in June, stemming from a charge of misdemeanor battery to which he pleaded guilty to back in December.
Not that anyone is likely to forget about Pretty Boy Floyd amidst a three-month hiatus from the spotlight.
He'll be on everyone's minds and tongues alike on June 9th—just eight days after he starts his term behind bars—when Manny Pacquiao goes between the ropes against Timothy Bradley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
It's the very same place where Money May will meet Junito on Cinco de Mayo. So far, Mayweather has done little to incite any sort of stirring personal rivalry with Cotto. Perhaps he's somewhat fearful of Cotto's size, seeing as how he'll be the biggest opponent that Money May has faced since Oscar De La Hoya took him to a split decision five years ago.
Mayweather's next bout is against an opponent with the size, strength and smarts to make things interesting, at the very least. He should, however, be able to take care of Cotto with his speed and defensive prowess.
Not too easily, though. If Mayweather's going to emerge from prison with a "Fight of the Century" against Pac-Man on his schedule, he'll need to give Bob Arum and Top Rank reason to believe that their client won't necessarily be due for a whooping in the ring.
Perhaps, then, if Mayweather beats Cotto—but not too badly—Pacquiao's camp will be more willing to put the Filipino fighter's prestige on the line.
Well, that and the profitability.
Above all else, Mayweather must be sure to keep his perfect pro record intact going into the slammer. Otherwise, his value as "must-see TV" plummets, Pacquiao's camp pulls out (again) and the boxing world moans again.
