NFL Draft 2012 Results: Sleeper Picks with Best Chance of Immediate Success

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

We know all about Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Trent Richardson, Matt Kalil, Justin Blackmon, Morris Claiborne and all the other big names that came off the board in the very early going of the 2012 NFL draft.

We know how Luck and RGIII fit in with their new teams. We know that Richardson, Kalil and Blackmon are expected to make immediate impacts for their respective teams. And we know that the Cowboys think Morris Claiborne is going to help them deal with the likes of DeSean Jackson, Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz.

But while all the big names got the press, there are more than a few sleepers out in this draft class. Here's a look at a few that will immediately have success with their new teams.

Mohamed Sanu (WR, No. 83 Overall to Bengals)

Someone played a bad joke by prank-calling Mohamed Sanu during the first round of the draft, but the Rutgers star receiver was ultimately drafted by the Bengals and it is going to pay immediate dividends.

A do-everything star in New Brunswick, Sanu actually went to Rutgers as a safety and wound up playing wide receiver, running back and quarterback, while also contributing on special teams.

In his final season with the Scarlet Knights, he caught 100 balls and showed tremendous improvement as an all-around receiver.

Now he'll get a chance to play opposite A.J. Green and possibly form a dynamic trio along with tight end Jermaine Gresham for quarterback Andy Dalton.

But for now, he simply has too much speed and versatility to be kept off the field.

Joe Adams (WR, No. 104 to Panthers)

Like Sanu, Adams goes to a team that immediately needs his help. The Arkansas receiver stepped up huge for the Razorbacks this past year and was a dominant force in the return game.

He can obviously come in as a punt returner from day one, but he also has good upside as a receiver for Cam Newton.

Adams plays faster than his timed speed and is a danger to take it to the house every time he touches the football.

Don't be surprised if he gets behind the defense a few times and finds himself on the receiving end of one of Cam's bombs.

Chris Rainey (RB, No. 159 to Steelers)

Don't expect every-down production from Rainey ever in his career, but the diminutive speedster is going to be a weapon for Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers in more ways then one.

Look for Pittsburgh to use him in certain packages and try to develop him into a Darren Sproles-like player down the line. He can line up in the slot, play special teams and return kicks.

Rainey won't be someone that the Steelers continually rely on, but don't be surprised if he starts making some plays with the ball in space.

Alfonzo Dennard (CB, No. 224 to Patriots)

The Patriots happily took a chance on troubled Nebraska cornerback Alfonzo Dennard, as he was once considered a fringe first-round talent. In fact, there was a time where people thought he was better than his former college teammate and first-round pick Prince Amukamara.

Dennard lacks elite top-end speed, but he has good instincts and is extremely physical. He's played against top competition throughout his career and he has good overall athleticism.

New England needs all sorts of help in the secondary, and we've seen Belichick find serviceable players—or make them serviceable in Julian Edelman's case—in recent years.

Dennard has a ton of talent and could be a steal if the Patriots find a way to get the most out of him.
