2012 NFL Draft Results: 10 Picks Nobody Ever Saw Coming

David LevinApr 30, 2012

Sometimes, there are NFL picks that everyone knows about, and then there are some picks that just leave you in a state of shock and awe.

Welcome to the latter feeling when it comes to this slideshow.

For these players, it is not so much about the fact they were drafted last week, but where they were taken and the teams that chose them.

There is no doubt the NFL draft is full of surprises, and fans and media will be talking about these surprises for some time.

Bryan Anger, Jacksonville Jaguars

1 of 10

Bryan Anger is still the talk of the Jacksonville Jaguars' fanbase.

And he has made Gene Smith a laughing stock in some media circles.

With players like Orson Charles, Nick Foles, Brandon Washington and Chris Rainey all being drafted after the 70th selection, it is hard to see how the Jaguars could have pegged this guy as the 70th best college prospect in the draft.

Director of Player Personnel Terry McDonough said he could not wait to talk about this pick in four seasons.

The question is whether McDonough will have the same job in four years.

Michael Brockers, St. Louis Rams

2 of 10

They don't get Justin Blackmon because of the Jaguars. They don't get Michael Floyd because of the Arizona Cardinals. They get Michael Brockers, and it seems like a consolation prize.

Jeff Fisher still needs help on the defensive side of the ball, and the offense still needs an upgrade.

Brockers is a good fit here and will develop with the other young line talent the Rams have.

Morris Claiborne, Dallas Cowboys

3 of 10

The only shock here is that it took the Cowboys until the sixth selection to make a splash.

Claiborne was the best defensive back on the board and the person Jerry Jones was targeting. He can thank Jacksonville for trading up to make this happen. St. Louis would not have dealt the pick if Justin Blackmon was still on the board.

The Cowboys signed Brodney Pool and Brandon Carr in free agency and then drafted the uber-talented cornerback out of LSU. It seems the Cowboys believe they are a back line away from returning to the playoffs.

Quinton Coples, New York Jets

4 of 10

When the Jets were on the clock, I believed for sure that they would select Melvin Ingram.

They took Coples instead, and now the debate will begin which player was better for Rex Ryan's defense.

Coples was the best pure pass-rusher on the board in this draft. If he can play every down like it is the last play of the game, the Jets have found their pass-rusher for the next decade.

Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins

5 of 10

If they had not taken Robert Griffin III with the second pick in the draft, this pick might be lauded.

Cousins may have been the best senior prospect in this draft. The fact that he was taken by the Redskins created a firestorm.

While there should not be a quarterback controversy, the fact RGIII spent most of his opening press conference in D.C. talking about Cousins is a shame and a slap in the face for the Baylor quarterback.

Bruce Irvin, Seattle Seahawks

6 of 10

What?

This pick came out of left field.

Irvin was a late second-, early third-round prospect. But Seattle must have seen something in the West Virginia prospect to make him the 15th selection in the draft.

Irvin has lived a hard life, which has been rewarded with the culmination of his being drafted last Thursday. If he plays as hard as he has worked to change his life, the Seahawks have a true gem.

A.J. Jenkins, San Francisco 49ers

7 of 10

The 49ers drafted Jenkins and basically told the NFL to watch out because they were adding receivers to their mix.

I guess Randy Moss and Mario Manningham being added to the roster wasn't enough to appease the masses.

Jenkins was a standout at Illinois and moved up draft boards for his size and speed. But to be a first-round pick was a surprise.

I thought for sure he would have been a second-round pick.

Janoris Jenkins, St. Louis Rams

8 of 10

Jenkins has all the talent to be the best cornerback in this draft. His personal life is what is holding him up.

Jenkins is the enigma of this draft and he adds instant improvement to a secondary that also claimed Cortland Finnegan in free agency.

With Michael Brockers being selected at No. 14 and Jeff Fisher adding his defensive mind to this team, the Rams' defense could be vastly improved this season.

Brock Osweiler, Denver Broncos

9 of 10

I'm not so sure this is as big a surprise as it could be.

The Broncos sign Peyton Manning, trade fan favorite Tim Tebow and then draft Osweiler in the second round.

The drama continues.

The Arizona State passer is 6'7" and 242 pounds and has a gun for an arm. But we have seen this before with big, strong-armed passers who do not pan out in the NFL.

Does everyone remember Dan McGwire?

Courtney Upshaw, Balitmore Ravens

10 of 10

When I heard the pick, it made all the sense in the world.

The Ravens have found Ray Lewis' successor.

Upshaw, a major force on the Crimson Tide defense this year, has first-round talent and was thought to be a Top-20 selection.

Being taken by the Ravens may have been the best thing for him. Baltimore traded down and out of the first round and still wound up with a player that can help continue the long line of solid defensive players associated with the franchise.

A solid pick, and maybe the best of the draft.
