Detroit Lions Mock Draft: Rounds 4-7 with Day 2 in the Books

The Detroit Lions have four picks on Day 3 of the NFL draft and numerous directions to go with them.

Offensive tackle, cornerback and the wide receiver positions were all addressed in the first three rounds and yet more help is needed both in the secondary and along the offensive line.

Selecting Ryan Broyles out of Oklahoma in the second round may have been a relative shocker, but rest assured GM Martin Mayhew knows what he is doing.

Mayhew will find ways to fill holes in the depth chart while also taking players he considers amongst the best available.

Here are the picks that have already been made:

Pick No. 23: Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

Pick No. 54: Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma

Pick No. 85: Dwight Bentley, CB, Louisiana-Lafayette

Now let's get to the fourth round...

Round 4, Pick 117: Ronnell Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma

Behind the starting trio of DeAndre Levy, Stephen Tulloch and Justin Durant the Lions have relatively no depth in the linebacking department.

Adding some pieces to the roster is a necessity moving forward and adding Ryan Broyles Oklahoma teammate Ronnell Lewis would be a smart way to go.

Lewis is 6'2", 253 lbs and is a ferocious hitter.

He would fit well into the Lions 4-3 defensive scheme with his quick feet, athleticism and ability to track down ball-carriers in the open field.

He plays hard on every play and could be useful on special teams early in his career.

Round 5, Pick 158: Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia

Dwight Bentley is a solid addition to the Lions depleted defensive backfield and will find a niche in nickel/dime coverage schemes early in his career.

But drafting Bentley does not erase Detroit's depth concerns at corner.

Chase Minnifield is a guy that is coming off arthroscopic knee surgery in January, so he obviously has question marks surrounding him.

But every player at this point in the draft has some knock on them and Minnifield is a real talent when he is on the field.

The Virginia Cavalier is great in man coverage and while he is not the biggest player at 5'10", 183 lbs, he brings a high motor and good lineage from his father, former NFL defensive back Frank Minnifield.

There are other corners to consider on Day 3 but if Minnifield proves healthy he could be a real steal in this draft, and I like taking that risk in the fifth round.

Round 7, Pick 219: Tauren Poole, RB, Tennessee

The Detroit backfield is unsettled to say the least.

Jahvid Best is attempting to return from a concussion, Mikel Leshoure can't get away from marijuana and injury and Kevin Smith is always struggling to find his spot in the rotation.

Tauren Poole from Tennessee could provide some stability and durability at the position without some of the flash of other running backs in the draft.

He is a solid 5'10", 205 lbs, and will hit the hole hard on every play.

Poole can be a good third-down option and goal line back with room to improve.

He is impatient at times in the backfield, but that can be worked on over time.

Is Poole ever going to be a feature back in the NFL?

Probably not.

But he would be a nice complimentary piece in the seventh round.

Round 7, Pick 230: Eddie Whitley, FS, Virginia Tech

At the back end of the seventh round anything can happen.

Trying to realistically project this pick is almost impossible, but hey that's what mock drafts are for, right?

The Lions may look at this thin safety class at some point and if they do then Eddie Whitley is an intriguing option.

The Virginia Tech safety is 6'1", 191 lbs and ran a 4.39 40-yard dash at the Hokies pro day.

He has good hands and has played multiple spots in the secondary over the course of his collegiate career.

Detroit also needs a third-string QB and could look to add depth to the defensive line, so do not be shocked if they go those directions at some point on Day 3.
