TUF Live: Urijah Faber, Dominick Cruz and the Best Coaching Rivalries

Riley KontekJun 7, 2018

"The Ultimate Fighter" has seen its fair share of intense coaching rivalries, which have led to epic fights from these feuds. This season of "The Ultimate Fighter" has been no different, as Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz have built quite a rivalry coaching opposite of each other.

Let's take a look at the best coaching rivalries through 15 seasons of the show.

Season 3: Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock

1 of 7

Season three was filled with plenty of heated confrontations, mostly between coaches Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock.

The two built a rivalry when the young, brash Ortiz disrespected the Lion's Den, prompting Shamrock to pick a fight. The two came into this season as coaches, with the season ending in a fight between them.

Ortiz completely outclassed Shamrock in terms of coaching, and went on to win all three fights that these men fought.

The only thing that Shamrock won was the "who needs more guys to hold them back" contest while shouting that Tito looked like a "bitch monkey." I'm not sure what that means, but I certainly cracked a smile.

Season 5: BJ Penn vs. Jens Pulver

2 of 7

In one of the most entertaining seasons in terms of fights and how the guys acted in the house, it definitely helped that two men who disliked each other were heading up the two teams.

BJ Penn and Jens Pulver developed a rivalry following their first fight, a close decision that went in the favor of Pulver. This was a loss Penn did not agree with, and he wanted a chance to redeem himself.

The two were picked as the coaches and did not disappoint. Immediately, when picking teams, Penn punked Pulver by telling the fighters to raise their hands if they wanted to be on Penn's team and not Pulver's. Most guys raised their hands, much to the embarrassment of Pulver.

In the end, the two met at the finale, and Penn gained his revenge. It was a fun rivalry to watch, and although Pulver lost the fight, he should get mad props for the quality of coaching he provided.

Season 9: Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping

3 of 7

This coaching rivalry did not necessarily see both coaches in heated confrontations. In fact, it was quite the opposite.

Michael Bisping continually got under Dan Henderson's skin all season, acting quite brash and somewhat unprofessional. During this, Henderson stayed quiet and vowed to let his fists do the talking.

Boy was Henderson right, as in their encounter, Henderson completed one of the most vicious one-punch knockouts in the history of mixed martial arts.

Season 10: Rashad Evans vs. Quinton Jackson

4 of 7

This might have been the most entertaining season of them all, purely based on the coaches and their heated exchanges.

From the first two minutes of the season premiere, Quinton Jackson and Rashad Evans were constantly jawing at each other about who was better and who had more losses.

The two were polar opposites. Jackson was seen as a bully who did not take his coaching role seriously, while Evans seemed like a genuine guy who was concerned about how well his fighters did. This led to a number of confrontations that saw doors destroyed, forehead-to-forehead arguments and personal attacks.

In the end, Evans's coaching reigned supreme. Not only that, but he won the actual fight when they met in the Octagon.

Season 11: Chuck Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz

5 of 7

One of the sport's biggest rivalries was featured in Season 11, as Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz drew coaching assignments and later fought at the conclusion of the season.

There were a number of heated verbal exchanges that almost became physical. There was also a lot of taunting, as seen in the coaches' challenge dodgeball game. Also, when Liddell said that "quitting on the stool is like tapping to strikes," an obvious jab at Ortiz's loss to Frank Shamrock, and you could see the animosity building.

In the end, Ortiz pulled from the fight due to injury and was replaced by Rich Franklin. Liddell was not pleased that Ortiz pulled from the fight, leading to more verbal jabs.

Season 14: Michael Bisping vs. Jason Miller

6 of 7

The fight may have been one-sided, but the season was very interesting to say the least.

Michael Bisping and Jason Miller were constantly pranking each other and getting into heated confrontations. Bisping constantly mocked Miller's competition level and stint as the host of "Bully Beatdown," while Miller continually annoyed Bisping with his antics and personality.

Putting Bisping, with his thick accent, against a guy who is one of the biggest clowns in MMA was pure gold, as there were rarely dull moments.

Season 15: Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber

7 of 7

The current season we are in has seen a great coaching rivalry. Both men dislike each other very much, leading to an upping of the competition.

The two have played minor pranks on one another, but their overall intensity and competitiveness has brought out the best in the fighters. Their petty bickering is not really the most entertaining, but their overall push for the fighters to win has made the season worth watching.

I cannot wait to see these two fight again, as their last bout against each other was one of the best fights of 2011.
