Ohio State Football Recruiting: Recapping a Wild Week in Buckeye Recruiting
Ohio State thought that they had a chance to impress some recruits in their spring game weekend last weekend when the curtain over the Urban Meyer offense was—at least partially—revealed to the college football world.
The aftermath, in addition to what happened just days before the spring game, was another recruiting surge that caught the recruiting world by storm.
The great week in recruiting started off the Monday before the spring game with a little bit of a surprise, as DT Tracy Sprinkle made his verbal to the Buckeyes.
Sprinkle is a player who had started to garner attention from other big schools and was on the verge of blowing up before he made his commitment to Ohio State.
The next day, Meyer and the Buckeyes found their QB for the future by landing one of the top dual-threat QBs in the country in Wichita Falls (Tex.) product J.T. Barrett.
Barrett's scouting report, according to Scout.com, makes him seem like a clone of sophomore QB Braxton Miller, who is expected to take a quantum leap in progression this season.
Barrett was ranked No. 7 among QBs based on Scout.com's rankings and is a huge sign of the type of impact the Buckeyes are making on the recruiting trail.
Ohio State kept up their momentum after Saturday's game when they got a verbal commit from talented OLB Alex Anzalone.
Anzalone has liked Ohio State for awhile but decided to pull the trigger on his verbal shortly after the spring game ended.
He had a massive offer list that included Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma and USC.
But the real surprise verbal that made all kinds of noise was that of DE Joey Bosa.
Bosa is a consensus star amongst most major recruiting services and the No. 2 DE on Scout.com.
Bosa was seen a while ago as an Alabama lean, but fell in love with Ohio State when he visited the weekend before the spring game.
He came back for the spring game on Saturday and decided that Ohio State was the place for him.
If you're keeping score at home, that's two straight years the Buckeyes have gotten a commit from an outstanding pass-rusher (Noah Spence in 2012) that few thought they would land at the start of recruiting.
Minutes later, OLB Lewis Neal also made his verbal public, becoming the 13th player to commit to the Buckeyes for the class of 2013.
In a span of just under a week, the Buckeyes not only added five more verbals, but they added several blue-chippers as well when you look at Barrett, Bosa and Anzalone.
These are players that have the ability to be difference-makers, and at positions of importance as well—OSU needed Miller's heir and some LB help, and you can never have too many defensive ends in the Meyer-Luke Fickell SEC-esque defensive style.
Ohio State may not get as many players in the rest of the entire recruiting season as they have in the last week, but they made another major statement in the recruiting world with an amazing week.
