Mel Kiper Jr. 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Players ESPN Guru Is Vastly Overrating

Adam WellsJun 3, 2018

When Mel Kiper Jr. speaks on the NFL draft, it is hard not to listen. In this case, we are going to look at some of the players that he has overvalued in his most recent mock draft.

To be fair, when Kiper puts together these mocks, he is doing so with his own information, rankings and things that he is hearing from people inside the NFL.

It doesn't make the picks any less interestingor in some cases, aggravatingand it is hard to look at some of these picks without wondering what is going on.

Here are the players that are getting vastly overrated in Mel Kiper's most recent mock draft.

Dontari Poe, DT, Selected By Carolina at No. 9

While I admit that I was on the Poe-to-Carolina bandwagon for a long time, my stance on that has softened considerably as we have gotten closer to draft day.

To be fair, Kiper's final mock likely won't be released until Thursday, but he is a big fan of Poe and will likely find it hard to move him off this spot, especially when the Panthers are so desperate for help up the middle.

The right choice for the Panthers would be LSU's Michael Brockers, who has similar upside to Poe and has shown a lot more consistency on the field in his college career.

Michael Floyd, WR, Selected By Arizona at No. 13

It's not that Floyd is a bad pick at No. 13I would like seeing him paired up with Larry Fitzgeraldbut he does nothing to solve the biggest problem the Cardinals have: Offensive line.

With David DeCastro, Jonathan Martin and Cordy Glenn all still on the board, it would be foolish to add another receiver.

Kevin Kolb doesn't need another player to get the ball to. He needs someone up front who can protect him long enough to be able to throw the ball.

Ken Whisenhunt loves to draft the best player available regardless of position, so Floyd would be a slight reach at this spot anyway.

Chandler Jones, LB, Selected by San Diego at No. 18

The Chargers have been desperately seeking a replacement at the outside linebacker/defensive end position since the end of Shawne Merriman's peak in San Diego.

Certainly, Jones looks the part of a potential pass-rushing star with size, speed and a great build. He isn't a bad choice here, he just isn't a safe choice. Jones missed five games last season due to a knee injury and he relies more on raw talent than natural ability to make plays.

Talent can carry you into the NFL, but you have to show the ability to make adjustments to schemes and blockers to make plays at this level.

Better fits would be Illinois' Whitney Mercilus or Boise State's Shea McClellin, both of whom are more advanced as pass-rushers than Jones at this point.
