Do You Prefer theYuvraj Singh Of Yesterday Or Today?
There was a player, an extremely talented player. He could spank the ball hard and when on song could blow any attack apart. His fielding was not the very best, but was only a step away from it. Once in a while he could bowl some left-arm-spin. The man I am talking about is Yuvraj Singh
He was the man who came to the game when he was a nineteen year old, and has been a part of it since. He often showed signs of his talent and played crucial knocks when most required. His knock in the NatWest series final of 2002 was something really special. Later in 2004, he scored a century against Australia in their own backyard.
This was Yuvraj Singh. A decent player whose worth in the team was a lot because of his batting and fielding strengths along with occasional bowling.
At the same time another reality functioned. That was that he was never a test player. Despite some small glimpses of his batting ability, he never really managed to become more than a one day player.
One of the main reasons for it was that he hardly had a complement able footwork. Along with this, he was also a poor player of spin. This stated that Yuvraj Singh was a limited player. Though there were signs of improvement in him day by day.
But then came 2005-06. the time when this player became more than just a use full person in the team. Yuvraj Singh's performances against South Africa, Pakistan, England, and the West Indies were absolutely brilliant. This was the time when he was given another crack in the test team. As usual he did not succeed, but he definitely looked more assured when you saw him.
Now you see a Yuvraj who has grown out of the man who became a star in 2005-06. Yuvraj has now gone past his purple patch, but the memories are ingrained so deep in everyone's minds that people still expect him to perform when India is under pressure. As a result he is given chances even when his form is not great and treated as if nothing is wrong with him. And the final outcome of this is the formation of Yuvraj "Goon" Singh.
This new man does not respect his seniors the proof of this is the way he patted Ganguly on the head when he got wicket in one of the matches the way some senior would treat a newcomer. This man also does not care for his form since he has got a cemented spot (in ODI's) come what may. His fielding has also fallen. His bowling has become mediocre (Kevin Peitersen, you were right). The only betterment of his stats is the increase in his weight.
Overall this he still hasn't got a better footwork and still struggles against spin. also most importantly he is back to square one in the test department though he has got a permanent spot in ODI's.
So these are the two people I am talking of. The first is past. A player who would bat, bowl and field pretty decently. He did have a lot of his flaws but more importantly he worked on his problems.
Then, of course there is this big shot of the Indian cricket team, who is very much a person who is a senior member of the ODI team and also the vice-captain. This man has got the same faults but still is thought of as god by himself and reimposed on him by the public.
Whom do you want in your team?
