Tiger Woods: 3 Reasons Why His Game Is a Perfect Fit for TPC Sawgrass
This upcoming May, the top golfers in the world will descend upon TPC Sawgrass for the prestigious Players Championship. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Rory McIlroy will all be contending, not to mention the other top players in the world that will be attending as well.
With all the buzz that has been going on about Tiger Woods, I'm afraid I must add my own piece to all the ongoing stories.
Woods has not had the best success at the Players the last few years, and has only won this venue once. However, with his current game, Woods may pull off a decent showing if he can put together four solid rounds, which has only happened once this year.
Well, folks, we'll just have to sit back and watch what Tiger does or doesn't do at the 2012 Players Championship.
Solid Putting
1 of 3It's true that Tiger Woods did not put on his best performance at the Masters, in fact it was his worst performance at the tournament since he was an amateur.
But let's go back to the previous week where Tiger won at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He shot all four rounds under par that week, and went on to capture his first official victory in over 30 months.
However, what stood out the most was his putting all throughout the week, especially on the last day.
Woods made a few clutch putts under pressure, and the long par putt he sank at the 15th hole was pretty much a signal that Tiger was back.
It seems that his short putting has improved, and the five and six footers that were once lipping out are dropping in confidently.
This is exactly what Tiger needs to bring to TPC Sawgrass, where the greens will be fast and demanding. If he can pour in those relatively short par putts and keep his round going, Woods will be able to put on a good showing at the Players.
Good Driving off the Tee
2 of 3Tiger Woods has a decent game off the tee, and that is key to success at TPC Sawgrass.
Of course that is key to success at any golf course, and Tiger has shown some positives in the area off the tee.
Of course, his driving was not to good at the Masters a few weeks ago, and he seemed to playing a lot of shots out form the rough that week.
Then again, I have to consider his driving accuracy at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Woods did hit three wood and long irons off the tee on Sunday that week, but he kept the ball in the fairway. Tiger also unleashed some of his power with the driver when he bombed a few drives down the fairway at Bay Hill.
Thus, if Woods can bring his solid driving to the Players, and keep the ball in the short grass, Woods will have a much better time giving himself scoring opportunities that should keep him in the hunt.
Decent Iron Play
3 of 3This is really the area where I think Tiger will be a little inconsistent with.
If you watched Woods at the Masters, then you know he hit poor iron shots, and even missed a simple nine iron shot at the par-three 16th where he kicked his club in frustration.
Then, at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Woods was a completely different golfer. He was hitting greens and knocking the ball close to the pin where he had good looks at birdies.
Woods was near flawless with his iron play that week, and if he can hit the irons as well as he did at Bay Hill, Woods will be set for the Players Championship.
However, if he completely looses control with his irons then expect to see another poor showing like he did at the Masters.
