Mayweather vs. Cotto: Money Won't Let Distractions Undo His Perfect Record

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Floyd Mayweather thrives in the face of outside pressure and distractions, and his latest such variables are not nearly enough to lead to him losing his May 5 fight against Miguel Cotto.

Among other things, Mayweather has to deal with the filming of HBO's 24/7 while he trains for the fight. He also has to deal with continued questions about Manny Pacquiao, even though he is not who Mayweather is fighting.

And these all would seem to pale in comparison to the biggest distraction hanging over his head.

Mayweather is scheduled to go to jail just 26 days after this fight against Cotto to serve a 90-day sentence for domestic violence. He has never served a prison term close to this length, and it would be impossible to fathom that this is not a seed of concern in Mayweather's head.

Whether it is or not, only Money could say. What we all know is, it is not going to hinder his performance.

Mayweather is a perfect 42-0 in the ring as a professional, and a good number of those fights came with distractions heavy enough to derail most mortals.

It all just seems to be part of the plan and show for Mayweather. He loves being the center of attention, and he has had the ability to focus on boxing no matter what was going on around him.

We need to look no further than his last fight to get a feel for this.

Leading up to his KO of Victor Ortiz, Mayweather had the same presence of 24/7 to deal with, and his fate in the domestic violence case that resulted in his aforementioned jail sentence was still hanging in the balance.

The distractions didn't slow him down then,—or ever before—and they won't now.
