Chris Greenwood to Lions: Video Highlights, Analysis and Scouting Report

Adam WellsApr 28, 2012

Playing at a Division III school isn't going to do a lot to elevate your NFL Draft profile, but Chris Greenwood is not your typical cornerback.

In a draft that was loaded with a lot of big-name, high-upside players in the secondary, Greenwood flew under the radar because he played at Albion college. That will make him look like a steal in a few years.

The 6'1", 193-pound cornerback has a great frame and speed to play the position in the NFL. He just has to get used to the physicality of the game.

What Greenwood Brings to the Team

If Greenwood played at a high-profile college, he would have been at worst a second-round pick. His size, speed and vertical leap are incredible.

At his Pro Day last month, Greenwood ran a 4.34 40-yard dash with a 43" vertical leap. Those are the kinds of numbers that cause scouting directors to drool.

When you play for a smaller school, you have to do something that NFL teams remember. Greenwood certainly did that in his workout, and now he has been rewarded with a shot to play at the next level.

What Experts Are Saying

Sports Illustrated's Tony Pauline wrote a column about the sleeper prospects from small schools. When the subject of Greenwood came up, Pauline called him "a tremendous athlete with the size and skill to play in the NFL."

Even more important than size is the ability to handle the NFL game. A lot of Division III players look the part of an NFL player, but very few of them actually display the talent.

Greenwood is going to be a project. He'll need to make adjustments to his game and get used to facing bigger, faster players, but the skill is there.

Rookie Impact

Coming from a small school in Division III, Greenwood is not likely to get a lot of time on the field right away.

Instead, he will have to work in practice to impress coaches and do his best on special teams to make an impact. It is not a glamorous way to begin, but he will eventually get his chance in the not-too-distant future.

While the Lions were notorious for their D-line last year with the "Suh Stomp" dominating headlines, they're weak in their backfield.  They bulk up their CB depth with small school CB Chris Greenwood.
