UFC 145: Jon Jones Is the Best Light Heavyweight of All Time
Jon Jones beat Rashad Evans on Saturday at UFC 145, securing his third title defense.
There can no longer be any doubt: Jon Jones is the best light heavyweight of all time.
There are other former UFC champions with more title defenses, like Ortiz and Liddell, but they did not fight the level of competition while they were champion as Jon Jones did.
In fact, when Liddell and Ortiz found themselves fighting Jon Jones' last several title contenders, they found themselves losing.
Ortiz lost to Machida when Ortiz was not far out of his prime, and would later be finished by Evans.
Liddell lost twice to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, and would also end up being finished by Rashad Evans and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.
Lyoto Machida, Shogun Rua, Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson were all arguably better fighters than both Liddell and Ortiz, even if they did not have the title defenses to show it.
The four of them lost almost exclusively to each other, with most of their fights with each other being closely contested contests.
While occasionally lower level fighters would find themselves beating the elite, such as Forrest Griffin, they could not maintain the success that the four highest ranked light heavyweights could.
And Jones dominated all four of them.
The ultra-competitive, highly-ranked fighters of the light heavyweight division have been completely outdone by a 24 year-old phenom; a fighter whose natural athletic gifts and remarkable fighting instinct have allowed him to outclass all competitors.
Jon Jones doesn't need to secure three more title defenses to be considered the best light heavyweight of all time.
His accomplishments in the division at this time are unparalleled, and his skills are undeniable. He is the most skilled and most accomplished light heavyweight of all time.
