Ohio State Spring Game: Braxton Miller Finds Go-to WR in Michael Thomas

David DanielsJun 7, 2018

Braxton Miller found a new best friend.

The Ohio State quarterback failed to muster up much success through the air last season. But if the freshman phenom Michael Thomas’ spring game performance is any indication of how his 2012 campaign will trend, Miller’s numbers will ascend dramatically.

After the exhibition, the dual-threat quarterback told reporters that (via CBS Sports) “It was fun getting the ball in the playmakers’ hands.”

And by playmakers, he means playmaker: Thomas. The 6’3” 4-star recruit out of Woodland Hills, Calif. hauled in 12 balls for 131 yards on the day.

Chris Carter, David Boston, Terry Glenn, Joey Galloway, Ted Ginn, Santonio Holmes…Michael Thomas? The true freshman wide receiver possesses the potential to add his name to the Buckeyes' bountiful list of downfield weapons. Putting his name into the same sentence as such immense talent is premature, but OSU fans who witnessed Thomas’ display of dominance will attest to his sky-high ceiling.

And in Urban Meyer’s spread offense, that ceiling is obtainable.

According to Pat Brennen of The Lantern, the former Florida head coach commented on the Buckeyes' pass-heavy game plan in the spring game, saying:

"

We did some things offensively that—that is not who we are. We’re going to be a very balanced offense. (The Spring Game) was very imbalanced, however, that was done for a reason. We're taking one of the worst passing teams in America a year ago.

"

And the Buckeyes' inability to move the ball through the air in 2011 can’t be understated. No OSU wideout racked up more than 14 receptions all of last year. Considering that alarming stat, the buzz generated from Thomas’ success is justified.

Skeptics will cry that it’s just a spring game—a scrimmage. But Ohio State looks like they’ve found a receiver capable of being a No. 1 target for the next three years at least. And that should scare Big Ten teams.
