Why Break Us Up?

brandon LamJan 25, 2009

The Detroit Pistons have broken up the team that won the NBA title in 2004, after shockingly beating the Los Angeles Lakers in six games, and that's where their dynasty began.

Late in the NBA season, the Pistons were able to acquire Rasheed Wallace. Wallace was the last piece that got the Pistons over the hump to defeat the Lakers in the NBA finals.

The Pistons were known to be a physical team, the Bad Boys, and a contender in the National Basketball Association.

Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Ben Wallace, and Rasheed Wallace were the four past triplets in the NBA and tough to defeat. Those guys were together for so long and were leaders that competed at a high level.

In 2005, the Pistons went back to the NBA finals but came up short in the against the San Antonio Spurs in seven games.

In the offseason, coach Larry Brown was reported had health issues and rumors started to fly around that he was attracted to other NBA teams. As a result, the Pistons brought out his contract and hired former Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders.

The Pistons were a great team under Larry Brown they played for the guy, they loved him, and played as a team.

Saunders was able to lead the Pistons with a 64-18 record and the first seed in the NBA playoffs. The Pistons looked like they were headed to win another NBA title.

The Pistons struggled to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the playoffs falling 3-2 before winning the last two games of the series. The Pistons worked so hard in that series, and after that series, they played a well-rested Miami Heat team.

Pistons struggled in that series also and were eliminated from the playoffs after the Heat knocked them out 4-2 and went on to win the NBA finals.

In the offseason, Ben Wallace, the Pistons best defensive player, was a free agent. The Pistons offered Wallace a four-year, $48 million dollar contract, But the Chicago Bulls wanted Wallace badly, and they signed him to a four-year, $60 million dollar contract. The Pistons decided to not increase there offer and signed center Nazi Mohammed.

The Pistons under Saunders were able to go to the Eastern Conference finals two more times. They ended up losing both times to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics. As a result, the Pistons fired Saunders and hired assistant coach Michael Curry.

In the press conference, general manager Joe Dumars made the statement: "Everybody is in play right now. Dumars went by his word when he traded away Chauncey Billups to the Denver Nuggets for guard Allen Iverson."

Dumars felt like Iverson can be a guy that can break people off the dribble and lead the Pistons to the NBA finals.

The Pistons have struggled to find their identity yet this season, and the team is unsure of itself.

But since general manager Joe Dumars felt like he needed to blow up the roster and go in a different direction, this is the price he has to pay.
