Camden Yards' 'Batman' and MLB's 30 Wildest Fan-on-the-Field Moments

Ely SussmanJun 1, 2018

Security crews at MLB ballparks are tasked with keeping fans seated.

However, drunkenness and powerful emotions have fueled wild fan-on-the-field moments that could not be prevented.

Taking the field without authorization is always wrong. Still, each of these 30 acts were unforgettable in their own way.

Thanks to the ticket holders who captured priceless footage and uploaded the following videos.

Drunk Red Sox Fan Abruptly Struck After 5 Seconds of Freedom (Fenway Park)

1 of 30

This intoxicated Boston Red Sox fan had it all planned out. Dashing out to center field in the middle of an inning would give him 15 minutes of fame and make his life complete.

Alas, a huge hit ended his fantasy prematurely.

Let it get you in the mood to enjoy 30 slides of great clips.

Mariners Fan Approaches Ichiro, Gets Blindsided by Security Guard (Safeco Field)

2 of 30

This Seattle Mariners devotee had success on the West Coast. Watch as he maneuvers to find himself within arm's length of Ichiro Suzuki!

At the same time, his experience must have been devastating. His bros will never pardon him for being unable to obtain a handshake from that distance.

Security once again executes a beautiful, blindside tackle.

Immediate Slip Dooms Shirtless Fan (Comerica Park)

3 of 30

Comerica Park in Detroit, Mich. has vast dimensions.

An elusive fan could lead a long chase in such a spacious venue.

We'll never know if this guy had that kind of potential, as he slips and falls while attempting to juke approaching guards.

Streaker Spreads a Message (Rogers Centre)

4 of 30

These sort of people cannot be stereotyped, but it's safe to assume that Y.O.L.O.—You Only Live Once—is a mantra of the average lunatic.

It's at least this streaker's philosophy, or else I don't believe he would have painted it onto his chest and back.

While the above moment looks suspiciously rehearsed, the subject contributes some much-needed speed and athleticism to this slideshow.

Tackled Fan Can't Walk off Under His Own Power (Chase Field)

5 of 30

There's nothing special about this pursuit. The Arizona Diamondbacks diehard goes down quickly.

Rather, it's the hilarious choice the guards made in dragging—and later carrying—the perpetrator across the warning track that caught my attention.

It takes 40 seconds before they give him the opportunity to walk off under his own power.

Mets Fan Gets so Close, Still so Far from Hugging Jose Reyes (Shea Stadium)

6 of 30

The cameraman took the audience into consideration when recording.

He foreshadows this woman's dash onto the field in 2007 by showing her sauntering down the stairs and loitering in the front rows.

She gets within inches of hugging New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes at first base before being escorted away.

The club was first in the National League East at the time. I'm surprised security was that lax.

Braves Outfielder Matt Diaz Helps Security (Citizens Bank Park)

7 of 30

From earlier clips, you may have noticed that MLB players rarely attempt to cease the interrupting individual.

That shouldn't be the case.

Atlanta Braves outfielder Matt Diaz subtly shuffled his feet to trip up this all-red runner.

It saved everybody some time...and each replay has me in stitches.

Cardinals Fan Sneaks onto Field Before Game 7 of World Series (Busch Stadium)

8 of 30

This interview courtesy of ESPN's St. Louis affiliate is a deviation from the rest of this article.

Tom Bajardi shares his unique story.

He discusses sneaking onto the playing field at Busch Stadium hours before Game 7 of the 2011 World Series between the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals.

Instead of sprinting at the pros or hollering like an idiot, Bajardi tried to blend in.

He was still identified and extracted, ultimately spending the night in jail.

Braves Fans Provide Entertainment During Rain Delay (Turner Field)

9 of 30

These buddies—although initially hesitant—swallowed their fears and ran onto Turner Field during a rain delay.

Their choice was a weird one because the weather conditions had already forced the teams into their clubhouses.

I suppose they were most interested in fooling around with the tarp.

Their fun didn't last.

Highlight of Baltimore Orioles 2011 Home Opener (Oriole Park at Camden Yards)

10 of 30

As you'll see, Oriole Park at Camden Yards has a bizarre method of dealing with troublemakers. The guards are in no hurry to resume play.

Instead, they are instructed to close in at a walking pace and let the individual tire from exhaustion.

This man surrenders with his body language after 37 seconds.

Billy Crystal Makes Contact in Spring Training (George M. Steinbrenner Field)

11 of 30

Comedic actor Billy Crystal allows me to break from disrespectful fans.

With permission from the New York Yankees, he signed a one-day MLB contract on his 60th birthday and suited up for a spring training game.

Crystal made preseason baseball exhilarating by battling the opposing starting pitcher to a full count.

Watch how his wild at-bat ended.

Barry Bonds Pursued in Final MLB Game (AT&T Park)

12 of 30

This is from Sept. 26, 2007.

It would be the final professional baseball appearance for slugger Barry Bonds, and apparently, somebody wasn't ready to let him go.

Her clear objective to touch a star player is akin to the New York Mets female fanatic who wanted Jose Reyes.

I've decided this incident was more notable being that it came at the very end of Bonds' San Francisco Giants tenure.

Desperate Fan Wants One Last Taste of Closing Ballpark (Yankee Stadium)

13 of 30

Perhaps this individual wasn't satisfied with the goodbye ceremony that the New York Yankees had orchestrated for their closing stadium. Or maybe he wanted to personally share his sentiments with the historic diamond.

From a great distance, we can still see the authorities break our of their neat formation to silence the bad apple.

Everything continued without a hitch.

Baseball Security at Its Absolute Laziest (Orioles Park at Camden Yards)

14 of 30

The aforementioned Baltimore Orioles policy for casually removing undesirables from the field of play was tested here.

Frankly, the organization should be embarrassed by this two-minute sequence.

Thin, energetic fans like this one should be apprehended with more urgency.

He got a lot accomplished while the cops took their sweet time surrounding him.

Minnesota Twins Fan Lightens the Playoff Mood (Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome)

15 of 30

This guy's antics distracted Minnesota Twins fans from what was otherwise a thrill-less 2010 American League Division Series that ended in a 3-0 New York Yankees sweep.

While we don't know exactly where his demonstration originated, the seating layout of the Metrodome suggests that he covered outstanding acreage to wind up at the right-center field fence.

What a daring act it was for him to attempt this during the playoffs when security is at its strongest.

Distraction Allows Fan to Swipe Umpire's Cap (Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum)

16 of 30

The combined efforts of two men culminated in shenanigans in Oakland.

One can be seen crossing to right field in the early seconds of the clip.

Everybody at the Coliseum is enthralled by his sprint, including the third base umpire. Another person capitalizes by swiping the cap cleanly off his head.

I suspect it was returned to the ump before the game action resumed. Either that, or there exists a bunker with ample spare caps specifically for scenarios like this.

Strength in Numbers: One Fan Scores Safely (Petco Park)

17 of 30

Another instance of teamwork!

Three fans interrupted a matchup between the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Security dispersed to quell the disturbances simultaneously.

With the staff's focus on the couple in left field, dude No. 3 enters from the opposite corner and weaves through his would-be captors to slide into home plate.

Although he was wrapped up shortly thereafter, I'm sure he was content with the experience.

Fan Sneaks on Field Amid Bench Clearing (Jacobs Field)

18 of 30

The Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays were on the verge of exchanging punches during this 2007 bench clearing.

A spectator capitalized on the chaos and tore off his t-shirt as he bolted to the outfield.

As viewers, we're left wondering why he was uninterested in interacting with players. After all, he had two 25-man rosters to choose from considering that the Indians and Jays had just vacated their respective dugouts.

Father and Son Assault Former 1st Base Coach Tom Gamboa (Comiskey Park)

19 of 30

Here is a serious and tragic occurrence, certainly a change of pace from the sophomoric videos seen so far.

Former MLB first base coach Tom Gamboa recalls being assaulted by an idiotic father and son at Comiskey Park during the 2002 regular season.

The intoxicated attackers caused permanent hearing loss.

Naked Man Does Dance, Cartwheels in Center Field (SunLife Stadium)

20 of 30

South Florida baseball fans wouldn't be so frequently criticized if each was as enthusiastic as this crazed streaker.

There is lengthier, more...vivid footage available of this naked individual.

However, it is my responsibility as a Bleacher Report featured columnist to withhold anything that could be potentially scarring.

Steve Bartman Reaches for Foul Ball (Wrigley Field)

21 of 30

Steve Bartman is the lone fan on this list who created a stir without stepping onto the field.

Leaning over the railing, he bobbled a playable ball that could have otherwise been caught by Moises Alou.

Had it been caught, the Chicago Cubs might have won the 2003 National League pennant and had the opportunity to end their century-long championship drought.

Attacks of Morganna, the Kissing Bandit

22 of 30

Morganna Roberts—often referred to by her mononym, Morganna—retired in 2000 after several decades as "the Kissing Bandit."

She would famously hustle to home plate to smooch notable players, including George Brett, Pete Rose and Nolan Ryan.

I don't believe we'll ever see another woman behave like her with security now so uptight.

'Batman' on Opening Day 2012 (Orioles Park at Camden Yards)

23 of 30

Although 2012's top fan-on-the-field moment wasn't the best in MLB history, it was darn hysterical.

This 26-year-old "Batman" has since received a lifetime ban from Camden Yards.

What a shame. The crowd was digging his choice of cape and boxers.

J.T. Snow Saves Darren Baker (AT&T Park)

24 of 30

Darren Baker worked the 2002 World Series as a bat boy for his father's San Francisco Giants. I hope he doesn't take offense to me clumping him with these other fans.

After all, he put himself in harm's way. Billy Crystal did the same by settling into the batter's box, and the attention-starved drunks also put themselves at risk.

That visual of J.T. Snow scooping him up is priceless.

Fans Flank New Home Run King as He Rounds 2nd Base (Atlanta Stadium)

25 of 30

Hank Aaron etched himself into the records book with this long ball, the 715th of his storied career.

The white high school students who appeared at his sides between second and third base didn't pose a threat. They were, in fact, congratulatory.

Nonetheless, their actions were significant.

Aaron had received plenty of racially-charged messages in the weeks and months prior to passing Babe Ruth as the sport's all-time home run king.

17-Year-Old Phillies Fan Gets Tasered (Citizens Bank Park)

26 of 30

Looking for controversy? You found it.

This tasering incident from May 2010 led to debate on several levels.

For one, many parents were in a tizzy after an interview revealed that this teenager had discussed running onto the field with his father beforehand. While not 100 percent supportive, the dad did nothing to stop his child from going through with it.

Then there were those who argued that using the taser was dangerous and unnecessary. Tackling was sufficient in the other security breaches, wasn't it?

'The Great Fan Escape' (Minute Maid Park)

27 of 30

Once in a generation, there is a misguided fan who runs through the perfectly-mowed outfield grass, scales a sizable wall and gets away.

I can't confirm that this free-running freak escaped the authorities. Just enjoy.

Chris Chambliss' AL Pennant-Winning Home Run in 1976 (Yankee Stadium)

28 of 30

First baseman Chris Chambliss powered the New York Yankees to the 1976 World Series with this walk-off home run.

It ended the club's streak of 11 consecutive seasons without an American League championship.

Yankee Stadium couldn't contain its excitement. People flooded the field immediately, which slowed Chambliss' trot around the bases.

He had to accelerate to a running pace to barrel through dense congregations.

Eventually, he found home plate and officially ended the ballgame.

Ten Cent Beer Night (Cleveland Municipal Stadium)

29 of 30

This original song recollecting Ten Cent Beer Night on June 4, 1974 is no substitute for actual footage of the event.

But seeing as how it took place 38 seasons ago, we shouldn't be picky.

CBS Sports published a detailed synopsis of unruly fan behavior that transpired throughout the evening.

In short, the actual matchup between the Texas Rangers and Cleveland Indians was secondary to the exploits of the 25,000-plus inebriated attendees.

Disco Demolition Night (Comiskey Park)

30 of 30

The organizers of Disco Demolition Night—disc jockey Steve Dahl and Mike Veeck—evidently learned nothing from the chaos at Cleveland Municipal Stadium five years prior.

Their ultimate promotion serves as another infamous example of an uncontrollable fan situation.

They were too successful in raising awareness. Discounted tickets drew nearly 90,000 attendees to a venue that seated only 52,000!

Things got pretty wild.

The crowd gradually seeped onto the field and quickly devoured it. Bonfires, orgies, etc.

The umpires deemed it unsuitable for baseball, which forced the home team to forfeit.
