College Football: 2013 Weekly Recruiting Roundup April 13-19
Folks, it's Thursday, and that means we've got our weekly recruiting roundup. No big intro here, as we've got a lot to get into. We're going East Coast, West Coast, Southeast, Southwest, Midwest and hitting five of the major conferences in what is our biggest recruiting update to date.
We'll start with the schools that are the sole representatives for their conferences. In the ACC, we have the Clemson Tigers. Dabo Swinney and his staff have grabbed a commitment from linebacker Dorian O'Daniel for the 2013 class.
From the East Coast to the West Coast, we hit the lone Pac-12 representative that's making big waves this week, USC. Lane Kiffin does not have a big class, but it is full of elite players, and he's added Kylie Fitts to this mix. Fitts, a defensive lineman, is among the region's best, and he'll fit in nicely with this star-studded class.
In the Big 12, we have Oklahoma making some noise with the commitment of in-state standout DJ Ward, a defensive end.
The Big Ten and the SEC are the two conferences that, as a whole, are doing the biggest work in the recruiting arena. No big-time Michigan commitments this week, but the other schools are feeling the pressure and picking up the recruiting ball.
Ohio State, the Wolverines' biggest rival, is making a charge by grabbing to solid commitments. Tracy Sprinkle is an Ohio kid on the defensive line that Urban Meyer earned a pledge from. The Buckeyes also dipped their cup into Texas to secure a commitment from dual-threat quarterback JT Barrett. Meyer beat out LSU and Les Miles to earn that pledge.
Another Michigan rival, the Spartans are doing more than just talking smack in the offseason. Coach Mark Dantonio also landed a commitment from Shane Jones, a prospect from Cincinnati. Jones is a big-time recruit at the linebacker position, and he's picked Sparty over the gang in Ann Arbor.
Sticking in the Legends Division with Michigan State, there is more noise being made as well. Northwestern snared a 4-star recruit, quarterback Matt Alviti. That's a huge get for Pat Fitzgerald and the Wildcats, having beat out Notre Dame, Nebraska, Illinois and Michigan State for the pledge. Nebraska lost out on Alviti, but they added two players to their 2013 class. Most notable is the addition of Josh Banderas, son of a former Husker tight end, to their class.
We've hit on Ohio State already, but Penn State is another team in the Leaders Division that is making a good push in 2013. Coach Bill O'Brien has eight kids in the boat now that Andrew Nelson, an offensive lineman, has joined the class.
From the Midwest, we head south to the conference that is just absolutely on a tear and has been for awhile, the SEC. Florida goes a week without a big notable commitment, but newcomer Mizzou joins the recruiting party by getting a commitment out of linebacker Nick Ramirez ($$). Mizzou's East Division foe, Georgia, added another quality player to their 2013 haul, as Reggie Wilkerson, a defensive back from Florida, joined the Dawgs.
In the SEC West we see that Alabama and Auburn are at it again, duking it out in the recruiting battle field the same way they do yearly in the Iron Bowl. Bama adds Anthony Averett, a wide receiver from New Jersey, who attended the spring game and decided Tuscaloosa was the place for him. A bit closer to home, the Tide also got a commitment from Deon Johnson, a wide receiver who is staying in Alabama.
Not to be outdone, the Auburn Tigers went out and got two commitments this week as well. Jarrad Davis and Cameron Toney are both in the fold for Gene Chizik as he looks to build some future depth on the defensive side of the ball.
Whew, a lot of information, but teams are really out there grinding to get the recruits. Be sure to check out Full Ride here at Bleacher Report for some great insight into the recruiting world.
