College Football Recruiting: 10 Teams Set to Have Subpar 2013 Recruiting Season
With the good comes the bad, and as a college program, you'll have your ups and downs on the field. It'll also spill over into recruiting, as each program has had a down or subpar year on the trail at some point.
For this read, we're talking 2013 recruiting with a down year twist. I'm going to give you 10 programs that will likely have a subpar recruiting year.
You probably won't see these programs in the top 10 recruiting class rankings this year.
10. Purdue
1 of 10The Boilermakers are in a tough spot, as they share their state with two other programs, Notre Dame and Indiana.
Now, obviously, the Irish recruit nationally and the Hoosiers get what they can out of the state and region, but Purdue never seems to make any clout.
Last year, they couldn't get a sniff out of Gunner Kiel, and I'm not even sure Jaylon Smith knows they exist this year. This won't be a good year for Purdue.
9. North Carolina State
2 of 10I mentioned last year several times that I felt the Wolfpack program was a sleeping giant. Well, it seems like they'll still be catching Z's this recruiting cycle in 2013.
It's evident that the Wolfpack lack clout around the state and Carolina region, as they had no interest from Jadeveon Clowney, Keith Marshall and DJ Humphries the past two years.
The State's top player, DL Greg Gilmore, doesn't list them among his leaders and they have stiff competition for Marquez North.
8. Kansas State
3 of 10The Wildcats had a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde season last year.
I mean that in the sense that had a great season on the field, but their efforts on the trail were horrific.
I have no reason to believe that this year will be any different, on and off the field. Colin Klein is back, but K-State only has three commitments so far this year, from lowly-ranked prospects.
7. Arizona State
4 of 10I really dig Sun Devil Stadium; it looks like a great place to play. So why don't any top recruits want to go there?
I'm not sure.
However, I have two thoughts. First, recruiting go-getter Noel Mazzone has bolted West for UCLA now, as he's looked upon as one of the best recruiters in the country. Secondly, will recruits be able to trust Todd Graham after he bolted Pitt after just one season?
6. Nebraska
5 of 10Now, Big Red is in the mix for 5-star DB Su'a Cravens, but it could be tough to beat out USC for Cravens. Also, the Cornhuskers didn't exactly set the world on fire last year in recruiting.
Right now, they sit with four commitments, but let's not forget that it took a solid surge late in the 2012 cycle for Nebraska to get just 17 pledges.
I have a wait-and-see approach with Big Red this year.
5. Oklahoma State
6 of 10The Cowboys also had a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde year, as they won a BCS bowl, but their recruiting cycle in 2012 was puzzling. The theme seemed to be decommitting in Stillwater, as they lost Bralon Addison and Dalton Santos.
Right now, they only hold one commitment for 2013 recruiting; that's not the start the Pokes were looking for this year.
This could be the second consecutive year they have a subpar recruiting season.
4. Michigan State
7 of 10I feel the Spartans are going to be residual victims this year of the big-dog Big Ten schools trying to out-do each other.
Those schools of course are Michigan and Ohio State.
The Wolverines are off to the best start of any program in the country for 2013 and, you know Urban Meyer is going to clean up as the cycle moves forward for Ohio State.
So, Sparty may be left with slim pickings in 2013.
3. Oregon
8 of 10Seems like the Ducks have to combat a shocking report on their program every offseason—from Cliff Harris, Darron Thomas and Jeremiah Masoli's offseason problems, to the recruiting scandal report, and now to this report tying them in with frequent Marijuana use.
At some point, parents of the prospects are going to start to really think twice about sending their sons to Eugene.
Could this be the year it catches up to the Ducks on the recruiting trail?
2. Arkansas
9 of 10You had to figure the Hogs would be on this list, right? You just had to.
First, the Bobby Petrino scandal in itself is a bad look for the program. Jamel James already has decommitted from Arkansas, leaving the Hogs with no commitments for 2013.
Then, there's uncertainty around the future of the program. With Taver Johnson only being the interim head coach, why would a prospect go somewhere where they are not even sure who's going to be the head coach this season, let alone in the future?
This won't be a good year for Arkansas at all.
1. Cal
10 of 10Tosh Lupoi is gone—to Washington too. Cal's class is not going to be like it almost was last year, as Lupoi was the driving force behind the Bears' efforts on the trail.
In fact, look for Washington to have a better year than California will. Lupoi is a well know recruiter in the West, he knows a ton of coaches and prospects seem to just flock to him.
While he was doing this for Cal in the past years, he's now in Montlake doing it for U-Dub. As such, Cal will suffer and have a subpar recruiting season in 2013.
