The New Cowboy: Could Jon Gruden Coach the Dallas Cowboys?

Taylor McInerneyJan 24, 2009

Young. Accomplished. No nonsense mentality. Champion.

That is just a few words to describe Jon Gruden.

After getting blindsided by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers early this month, Jon Gruden has not been heard from.

He is not going to Notre Dame as some reports suggested.

He has not even been offered an assistant coaching job at any level.

Why not?

It is because teams know they will only have Jon Gruden for a year.

Everyone knows that this man will have a head coaching job soon enough.

The perfect fit is Jon Gruden in Dallas.

With all respect to Wade Phillips, Jon Gruden would be a much better coach for the Dallas Cowboys. It probably won't happen this year, but if things don't turn around, you may be welcoming Jon soon.

Here are some good reasons.

1. Leadership

Picture the sidelines. It is the fourth quarter in Philadelphia. One minute and forty seconds left in the game. The Cowboys have the ball and are down four. A field goal won't cut it. Out of a timeout runs the Dallas quarterback, Tony Romo.

Number Nine has a little bit of a swagger in his step. Everyone is amazed as he makes precision passes and drives the Cowboys to a victory. This new confidence is talked about on Monday on ESPN First Take and Skip Bayless tells the world that Jon Gruden has lifted "Tony Romeo" right out of the gutter. The coach that loves quarterbacks has brought new life to the Cowboys' franchise man. Troy Aikman finally calls him a leader and the positive feedback does wonders for the Cowboys.

2. Discipline

After Terrell Owens criticized the play calling because he didn't get enough catches, Jon Gruden holds a meeting with himself and T.O. After the meeting Terrell Owens isn't heard from for the rest of the season. No noise. No talk. Interesting, but I really wouldn't want to know what Jon Gruden had to say. After all this is a family website. Let us just say Chuckie got his point across.

3. "I worked for Al Davis."

Having worked for Al Davis, Jon Gruden would be more than prepared to work for Jerry Jones—a.k.a. Al Davis 2.0. An owner who wants to control everything at all times. What is so hard about that? After all Jon Gruden built a Super Bowl team for Al Davis. No he would inherit one and try to push to a Super Bowl. This would not phase Gruden at all. Something Wade Phillips would not be able to say.

So what would it be like? That signature visor with a nice blue star on the front. Constant talk about his relationship with players. It would be exactly what Jerry Jones would want, the perfect soap opera.

I see a loving relationship already.

So don't worry Cowboys' fans. Don't worry Gruden's fans. Sooner than later both of you will be the same fans. To me, this would be perfect.
