Cleveland-Golden State: Lebron, Cavs Win on Buzzer Beater
Johnny RussoJan 24, 2009
Lebron James capped off a wild night in Golden State with a game-winning buzzer beater to lift the Cavs to a 106-105 victory. With 6.4 seconds left, Stephen Jackson knocked down a deep jumper over James to give the Warriors a one point lead and they appeared to have the game.
On the next possession, Mo Williams in-bounded the ball to Lebron in the left corner. Lebron waited until the last second before he knocked down a step back jumper over Ronny Turiaf to seal the victory.
"It's a great feeling, especially when you get it like that and then you hear the horn and the shot goes in and there's no way they can try to make a comeback at us," said James. "I wish everyone could get that type of feeling. It's unbelievable."
Unbelievable was the best way to explain this game as there were 27 lead changes and 15 ties throughout the game. The teams battled back and forth in the final quarter and the short-handed Cavs had to be relieved to see that final shot go in.
Lebron led the way for the Cavs with 32 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Although he was just 10-of-16 from the free throw line, he made up for it in the final seconds. Mo Williams missed his first seven shots of the game before turning it up in the second half. He finished the game with 14 points and six assists, including a clutch three-pointer with 51 seconds left to give the Cavs a one point lead.
Stephen Jackson led the way for the Warriors with 24 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Corey Maggette followed behind him with 23 points and he shot 11-of-11 from the line. Monta Ellis made his season debut tonight after missing the first half of the season with an ankle injury that he suffered in a moped accident in the off season. He received a warm welcome from the Golden State fans and he poured in 20 points in 34 minutes.
With this win, the Cavs improved to 33-8 and hold first place in the Eastern Conferene. They are ahead of the Boston Celtics by just 0.5 percentage points and the Orlando Magic are just a half-game behind them also.
Last night was a much needed win for the Cavs. I sense that playing this road trip short-handed is starting to catch up with them. They will play the Utah Jazz (25-18) tonight and for them to go into overtime last night would have been dreadful. Utah is an elite team in the Western Conference and the Cavs will have to bring their "A" game tonight without getting much rest. They will then get two days off before they finally return back home on Tuesday night to take on the Sacramento Kings (10-33).
