SEC Football Weekly Recruiting Roundup: Busy Weekend for Auburn and Alabama

Barrett SalleeApr 18, 2012

Every Wednesday here at The SEC Blog, we will update you on the latest commits, decommits and rumors in the recruiting world.

Six SEC schools held spring games last weekend, which provided a great opportunity to lock up commitments for the class of 2013.

Auburn, Alabama and Georgia are all off to great starts for the class of 2013, and that momentum continued.

Commitments

Auburn got a pledge from Cameron Toney, a 4-star inside linebacker prospect, according to 247Sports.com. At 6'3", 225 pounds, Toney already has the size to be a linebacker in the SEC. Auburn defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder has said that he wants more size on defense. Therefore, once he gets in the strength and conditioning program, Toney should be a perfect fit for Auburn.

Also committing to the Tigers over the weekend was Jarrad Davis, a 6'2", 210-pound outside linebacker from Camden County High School in Kingsland, Ga. Davis is rated as a 3-star prospect, according to 247Sports.com, and chose Auburn over an offer from Tennessee.

Across the state, Alabama continued to load up for the class of 2013 with a commitment from Anthony Averett, a 6'1", 180-pound safety from Woodbury, N.J. He is ranked by 247Sports.com as the nation's No. 9 safety prospect and the No. 3 recruit in the state of New Jersey.

The Tide also got a pledge from Deon Johnson, a 6'1", 175-pound athlete from Spanish Fort, Ala. With 4.3 speed in tow, Johnson can be a difference-maker on either side of the ball. He is ranked by 247Sports.com as the eighth-best player in the state of Alabama.

James Franklin continued the momentum at Vanderbilt with the commitment of 3-star tight end Nathan Marcus. At 6'5", 220, Marcus is a large target that will make a big impact on the Commodore offense, which recently lost Brandon Barden to the NFL.

Also headed to Nashville will be Jonathan Ford from New Hope, Ala. Ford is a 5'11", 210-pound bruising running back who chose Vanderbilt over offers from Mississippi State, Arkansas State, Purdue and Minnesota.

South Carolina also held its spring game over the weekend, and—not coincidentally—nabbed commitments from two recruits of their own. Jasper Sasser, a 6'2", 185-pound athlete from Jacksonville, Fla. committed to the Gamecocks. He can play safety or wide receiver, and we all know that Steve Spurrier likes those tall receivers in Columbia.

Joining Sasser in Columbia will be Bryce King, a 6'3", 293-pound center from Dillon, S.C. He is rated as a 4-star prospect by 247Sports.com, and is listed as the fifth-best prospect in the state of South Carolina. He chose South Carolina over Clemson, LSU, North Carolina and N.C. State.

Georgia also kept its momentum going over the weekend with the commitment from Reggie Wilkerson, a 5'11", 175-pound cornerback from across the state line in Citra, Fla. Wilkerson is ranked as a 4-star prospect, according to 247Sports.com, and has the athleticism to play on either side of the ball.

News and Rumors

ESPN released its ESPN 150 list of top recruits; and as expected, SEC schools already have commitments from many of its members.
