PGA Tour Fantasy Golf: The Valero Texas Open Preview

John MillerJun 4, 2018

This week we are in Texas for the Valero Texas Open. The tournament will be played on TPC San Antonio in San Antonio. Brendan Steele is the defending champion. The winner will take home $1,116,000 and 500 FedEx Cup Points.

The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio is one of the toughest tracks on the PGA Tour, at least as far as scoring goes. We are looking for very accurate players who are also excellent putters. You're better off going with the tortoise as opposed to the hare on a course like this. Slow and steady isn't sexy, but its almost a must-have here.

Most of the usual suspects are absent from the field this week, so we're going to have to dig a bit deeper and rely more on players who have a good track record here, even if they haven't been on top of their game recently.

Yahoo! Weekly Lineup Game

Group A

Kevin Na (Starting)—Na is coming off of three solid finishes in a row (T4, T12 and T8). He ranks 21st on the PGA Tour in Driving Accuracy. He missed the cut here last year, but the pickings are slim in Group A this week.

Matt Kuchar (Bench)—Kuchar followed up a strong finish at The Masters (T3) with a poor finish at the RBC Heritage (T44). He ranks 22nd on the PGA Tour in Driving Accuracy and 16th in Greens in Regulation Percentage. His putting could be trouble and he's got no track record to speak of here.

Also worth using: N/A

Group B

Fredrik Jacobson (Starting)—Jacobson had a strong finish at The Masters (T19), but he's been very hit or miss this season. But he's been outstanding finishing T5 and 2nd here the last two years.

Charley Hoffman (Starting)—Hoffman is coming off of a strong showing (T8) at the RBC Heritage last week. He has an excellent track record here, having finished T2 and T13 here the last two years.

Ryan Moore (Bench)—Moore has been very up-and-down this season, but he has some potential here. He ranks 17th on the PGA Tour in Driving Accuracy, and that could really help him this weekend.

Marc Leishman (Bench)—Leishman has the overall skill set to succeed here, but he's yet to put it all together for an entire tournament so far in 2012. He's a decent player to stash on your bench due to the weak field here.

Also worth using: N/A

Group C

Johnson Wagner (Starting)—Wagner has three top-four finishes this season, including a victory at the Sony Open. He ranks 21st on the PGA Tour in Greens in Regulation Percentage and 12th in Strokes Gained - Putting.

Bud Cauley (Bench)—Cauley doesn't have experience here, but he's been on a roll recently. His last four finishes: T16, T4, T8 and T37. He has the game to potentially win here.

Also worth using: N/A

Who to choose in your Weekly Survivor/Eliminator/Earnings League?

For me it's pretty easy, I'm rolling with Fredrik Jacobson here. The only other players I would consider are Charley Hoffman or Johnson Wagner.

For the record, I've already used: Bryce Molder, Steve Marino, Bill Haas, D.A. Points, Martin Laird, Hunter Mahan, K.J. Choi, Rory McIlroy, Jarrod Lyle and Lee Westwood, Henrik Stenson, Charl Schwartzel, John Senden, Bubba Watson, Graeme McDowell and Bo Van Pelt.

GROUP 1: Fredrik Jacobson

GROUP 2: J.B. Holmes

GROUP 3:  Bud Cauley

GROUP 4: Cameron Beckman
