College Football Recruiting: 10 Schools Always Under Consideration
In recruiting, many times, the schools that a prospect considers are close to his region as it's just natural for anybody to not want to venture too far from home. So if a prospect is from, say, the South, then his list will be dominated by SEC schools.
In the Midwest? Big Ten schools will be on his list and the Pac-12 will make up most of a West Coast prospect's list. If he's a 5-star or high ranked 4-star prospect, then you can sprinkle in some national schools to the mix.
However, there are certain schools that have the recruiting pull and prowess to go anywhere in the country and be considered by a prospect no matter where he resides. Here are 10 schools always under consideration no matter what.
10. Tie
1 of 10I have a three-way tie for No. 10 folks, sorry.
Georgia
The Bulldogs have most of the pull around the South of course. However, Matthew Stafford was from Texas and Knowshon Moreno from New Jersey. So the Dawgs can go in other territories and get players.
Auburn
The Tigers got Jordan Diamond from Big Ten country last year, and even 5-star RB Ty Isaac from Illinois is interested in playing on The Plains.
Oregon
When the Ducks come calling, your interest rises. Whether it's the uniforms or the great facilities, Oregon is considered by a lot of prospects. Even Robert Nkemdiche put them in his top seven last month.
9. LSU
2 of 10What Les Miles does is exactly the strategy you need to apply when coaching at LSU: Lock down Lousiana then spread into the rest of the South. After that, then see what you can do nationally.
Even if a prospect is not likely to go to LSU, he will still try to trip make there because of the electric game day atmosphere. Then when he arrives, he comes back more impressed than he originally was.
8. Texas
3 of 10Texas only leaves the state for a player it really thinks is going to be a premier, dominant force for the team. So that goes to show you how highly the Longhorns think of Toshiro Davis, right?
Yet, on a national scale, whenever Texas comes calling, a prospect is flattered. Mack Brown feels he has all he needs in the Lone Star State, yet no matter where you're from as a recruit, if Texas offers, you consider it.
7. Michigan
4 of 10Big Blue has always had a national pull through the years. Whether it be pulling Justin Fargas from Los Angeles and Denard Robinson from Florida, that maize-colored "M" has serious national weight.
Brady Hoke has done a great job of re-establish Michigan as a recruiting force, as he has done a good job of recruiting both in and out of Big Ten territory.
6. Ohio State
5 of 10Of course, as with most talk, when you mention Michigan, Ohio State is close and vice versa. The Buckeyes have their good share of national pull as well.
They've shown they can pull prospects from Florida like Santonio Holmes and Michael Brewster, snatch an Eli Woodard from the East Coast or stretch all they way to California and get a Marcus Baugh.
They're going to always be under consideration and were even Mark Sanchez's top four in 2005.
5. Notre Dame
6 of 10The Irish just downright have to have a national pull, or they're not going to have a solid recruiting class. Indiana and the greater Chicago areas are solid grounds for talent, but South Bend is not close to California, Texas or Florida.
Yet, the Irish still can go into those states and get a good player.
Whether it's grabbing Jimmy Clausen from California, Corey Robinson from Texas, Manti Te'o from Hawaii or Zeke Motta from Florida, the Golden Domers are a school you have to consider anywhere you're from.
4. Florida State
7 of 10I remember back in the day when if you had an offer from Florida State, then you were just on cloud nine. The Seminoles were "the school" in the '90s and early 2000s.
Well, they're getting back closer to that status under Jimbo Fisher, folks. Fisher has shown the ability to go into Texas and take a Mario Edwards, take Jameis Winston from Alabama and even get a Joue Matias from New Jersey.
Let's not forget the national pull of the 'Noles, as they got 5-star recruits Dominic Robinson, Travis Johnson and Chris Rix from California in the early 2000s.
3. Florida
8 of 10Settle down, Gator fans, of course you'd be on this list. I never forgot about UF for a second.
The Gators' national prowess is ever growing, and they're a prime time program that is always under consideration by every player they offer.
Whether it's getting Ronald Powell and Josh Shaw from California, Shariff Floyd, Jordan Reed and Dominic Easley from the Northeast or even Chris Martin from Colorado, Florida can go anywhere and entice a player to come to Gainesville.
2. Alabama
9 of 10The Crimson Tide have become one of the gold standards of college football and college football recruiting. If a player has an Alabama offer, then you just look at him in a different way.
Whether it's getting Mark Ingram from Michigan, Jesse Williams all the way from Australia, Cyrus Kouandjio from Maryland or taking away Landon Collins from LSU, Alabama is always under consideration from anyone they offer.
Always.
1. USC
10 of 10The Trojans do it big on the recruiting trail folks. ESPN'S Tom Luginbill did a solid write-up on the recruiting advantages USC has compared to everyone else.
From getting Leonard Williams and Nelson Agholor from Florida, Max Browne from Washington, John David Booty and Joe Mcknight from Louisiana, and Fred Davis from Ohio, that's impressive.
Toss in other names like LenDale White from Colorado, Dwayne Jarrett and Brian Cushing from New Jersey, Kyle Prater from Illinois, John Martinez from Utah, Nick Perry and Ronald Johnson from Michigan and Mike Morgan from Texas.
Every other school in the nation knows that for an elite player in their region, they not only have to battle their conference rivals but USC too, no matter where they're located.
