NBA Draft 2012: Power Ranking Top Underclassmen in This Year's Draft

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

The 2012 NBA draft class is loaded with future stars, and like most other years, the cream of the crop are the underclassmen.

Most of the elite players have made their decisions, but the ones who have yet to do so have until April 29 to inform the league office of their eligibility.

Let’s take a look at the top available freshman and sophomore prospects in the event.

No. 1—Anthony Davis*

The consensus No. 1 overall pick has yet to officially declare, but the team is reportedly holding a press conference on Tuesday afternoon to break the news.

Davis was the best player in college basketball this past season, and he’s going to be one heck of a professional basketball talent based on his defense alone.

Once he adds some more consistency to his offense, this kid will be a superstar.

No. 2—Michael Kidd-Gilchrist*

Kidd-Gilchrist is going to follow the rest of Kentucky's stars to the NBA, and that should come as no surprise. It is widely believed that he will fall in the No. 2 to No. 5 range and figures to become an extremely good player at the next level.

The 18-year-old small forward is mature beyond his years, plays incredible defense and does the little things to win.

People who work hard like Kidd-Gilchrist always find success in life. He will be a surefire stud in the association.

No. 3—Bradley Beal

Florida’s star shooting guard turned it on and played up to his incredible abilities as the season came to a close.

Beal has deep three-point range, great ball-handling skills and a strong body that will allow him to get to the cup and absorb contact.

There is nothing more you can ask for in a 2-guard prospect.

No. 4—Harrison Barnes

Barnes is a born scorer who can move like a smaller guard despite his 6’8”, 210-pound stature.

He’s going to be a talented wing player and likely a No. 1 scoring option for whichever team lucks out and selects him.

No. 5—Austin Rivers

The Duke product surprised a number of people when he elected to go pro after a mediocre freshman season.

Considering his sky-high potential to become a superstar in the NBA, it shouldn’t have been that shocking that this shooting guard decided to leave school and start his pro career.

No. 6—Andre Drummond

UConn isn’t able to play in the 2013 NCAA tournament, which was most likely a big factor in Drummond deciding to leave the program and declare himself eligible.

He never truly dominated in college the way his 6’11”, 275-pound frame suggested he would have. A team will certainly gamble on the upside here, though, and it could pay dividends.

No. 7—Jared Sullinger

Sullinger is perhaps the most ready of any prospect in the entire class to come in and contribute right away for an NBA team.

He’s spent two years at Ohio State honing his game, and will immediately become a presence in the post.

No. 8—Kendall Marshall

The nation’s leading assist artist is going to become a valuable commodity in the pros.

Anyone who can get his teammates involved with unselfish play and gifted passing is an asset.

No. 9—Perry Jones III

Jones should be battling with Anthony Davis for the No. 1 spot on this list—he’s an insanely gifted athlete who is supposed to possess an all-around skill set.

However, he wasn’t able to put it all together and figure out how to play at a consistently high level in the Big 12, making it doubtful that it will all click in the NBA.

No. 10—Tony Wroten Jr.

The Washington star has a lot of untapped talent. He has good size, great passing ability and insane upside.

When it's all said and done, he could be the best point guard to come out of this class.

*Expected to declare Tuesday.
