2012 NFL Draft Predictions: Teams That Will Have No Impact on Draft Day

Wes ODonnellApr 17, 2012

Seven teams have double-digit selections in the 2012 NFL draft and six teams have six or less.

That leaves a little more than one-third of the league with seven to nine selections on draft weekend.

You don't need a ton of picks to make a big impact in the draft, though—just look at Washington.

The Redskins have only six picks but already made a huge impact by jumping up four spots to insure themselves a chance at a franchise quarterback (likely Robert Griffin III). Because of the deal, the Rams have three selections in the top 40 picks and have the opportunity to make a big splash as well (they may not be done dealing yet, either).

Almost every team has the chance to make something happen when on the clock (two teams don't), but not everyone will choose to act.

Here's a look at the teams that can't make a big impact and the teams that won't.

New Orleans Saints

We start with the easiest of the bunch since the Saints traded away their first-round pick to the Patriots last year and were stripped of their second-round pick.

With Sean Payton suspended for the season and GM Mickey Loomis out of the loop early in the year (he'll be able to draft, though), this team has some leadership problems it hopes will be resolved when Drew Brees is re-signed.

As for the Saints' draft plans, expect them to select mature players who are more likely to be immediate contributors rather than developmental prospects.

Even with later-round picks, Loomis should be able to draft players who can either make the roster or be on their way without any trouble.

Oakland Raiders

New GM Reggie McKenzie has his work cut out for him and is limited to only five picks in the draft—three of which are compensatory and untradeable.

The Raiders have a lot on their plate and a lot of question marks but do have some talented skill positions players. The problem with said players is keeping them healthy. Star running back Darren McFadden has never played a full season and missed the final nine games last year while receivers Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore, smaller in stature, were often banged up.

They have decent enough depth to get by with, though, and will likely focus this entire draft on the defensive side of the ball where they have many needs.

How effective they can be with only two movable picks this year remains to be seen.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jags don't have a new GM, but they do have a new owner. GM Gene Smith doesn't have the luxury of messing up a fourth straight top-10 draft pick (they traded up to No. 10 last year for QB Blaine Gabbert).

Rather than gamble the way Smith has on players like Tyson Alualu and Gabbert, he has to find a way to land safe players who can help make this team better immediately. Gabbert won't survive as the starter, nor Smith as GM, if there isn't improvement from the league's most inept offense.

That means the team must stop taking chances and start drafting smarter. If that means putting their head down and being quiet, so be it.

This draft isn't the time to try and win over fans—they had that chance when Tim Tebow was available. This draft is about getting better.
