Boise State Football: Broncos Post-Spring Game Two-Deep Depth Chart
The 2012 Spring game was a huge success for the Boise State Broncos. So much so, the naysayers and haters are already out in full force.
You have to believe coach Petersen liked what he saw—excluding the kicking game of course.
The game was both exciting and revealing. At the conclusion of the contest, several position battles became more clear, including the ever-curious quarterback competition.
It looks like the Broncos do not plan to fade away anytime soon.
With that in mind, let's take a look at the post-Spring game two-deep depth chart.
Quarterbacks
1 of 8Joe Southwick proved that he is the leader in the quarterback battle for 2012. That doesn't mean the other three guys give up anytime soon. It just means Southwick looked like a veteran and played the way a veteran should during the Spring game.
Nick Patti was clearly the No. 2 guy behind center. However, coach Petersen may choose to redshirt him if Southwick wins the starting job.
Quarterbacks:
1. Joe Southwick
2. Nick Patti (Jimmy Laughrea if Patti redshirts)
Running Backs
2 of 8D.J. Harper did not play in the Spring game, and for good reason.
Coach Petersen does not want to get their best running back hurt. Harper will need to stay healthy if Boise State wants to move the ball on the ground.
Drew Wright did play Saturday and looked good. He will be the obvious backup to Harper. However, behind him there are really slim pickings.
The Broncos will need to get Jay Ajayi healthy and hope that one of the new guys steps up in the fall.
Running Backs:
1. D.J. Harper
2. Drew Wright
Offensive Line
3 of 8The offensive line should be solid this season. However, in the Spring game there were a few missed blocks and some sloppy play at times.
Overall, they looked good, and by fall they should be a strength for the Broncos.
The starters are easier to pick than their backups in this category. This could look much different by the time Michigan State rolls around.
Offensive Line:
LT 1. Faraji Wright
LT 2. Charles Leno
LG 1. Joe Kellogg
LG 2. Spencer Gerke
CT 1. Cory Yriarte
CT 2. Matt Paradis
RG 1. Jake Broyles
RG 2. Brenel Myers
RT 1. Charles Leno
RT 2. Michael Ames
Wide Receivers
4 of 8The wide receivers for the Broncos will be a key strength in 2012.
They are talented and they are deep. Look for Matt Miller to continue to succeed and Kirby Moore to step up big time.
Troy Ware, Mitch Burroughs, Dallas Burroughs, Chris Potter, Geraldo Boldewijn and tight ends Chandler Koch and Gabe Linehan should all shine come fall.
Wide Receivers:
WZ 1. Geraldo Boldewijn
WZ 2. Mitch Burroughs
WX 1. Matt Miller
WX 2. Dallas Burroughs
WH 1. Kirby Moore
WH 2. Chris Potter
TE 1. Gabe Linehan
TE 2. Chandler Koch
Defensive Line
5 of 8The defensive line is the biggest rebuilding project for the Broncos. However, after Saturday's game it looks like they are in pretty good shape.
Sure, they may not be what they were last year after losing so many talented players, but there is certainly talent with tons of potential.
Demarcus Lawrence, Mike Atkinson and Sam Ukwuachu all had good efforts in the Spring game and looked ready for prime-time.
Defensive Line:
DE 1. Demarcus Lawrence
DE 2. Tyler Horn
DT 1. Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe
DT 2. Greg Grimes
DT 1. Michael Atkinson
DT 2. Justin Jungblut
DE 1. Sam Ukwuachu
DE 2. Darren Koontz
Linebackers
6 of 8The linebackers were out in full force for the Spring game. It looks like the Broncos will have some solid starters and decent depth in 2012.
Look for J.C. Percy to have a good year along with Tyler Gray. Blake Renaud had a great interception in the Spring game and he looked good overall.
There are a few other guys on the roster that could show up big time in the fall, and the depth should give coaches some good options come game time.
Linebackers:
MLB 1. Tommy Smith
MLB 2. Blake Renaud
WLB 1. J.C. Percy
WLB 2. Tyler Gray
Defensive Backs
7 of 8The defensive backs for the Broncos should be much better in 2012.
Jerrell Gavins didn't play in the Spring game, but you can count on him being ready by the time the season starts.
Gavins along with Ebo Makinde and Jamar Taylor should give the Broncos good experience at corner. Jeremy Ioane and Lee Hightower bring the same kind of veteran presence at safety.
Defensive Backs:
CB 1. Jerrell Gavins
CB 2. Ebo Makinde
CB 1. Jamar Taylor
CB 2. Bryan Douglas
NK 1. Corey Bell
NK 2. Dextrell Simmons
FS 1. Lee Hightower
FS 2. Darian Thompson
SS 1. Jeremy Ioane
SS 2. Hazen Moss
Kickers
8 of 8The biggest disappointment of the Spring game had to be the kicking game.
The first extra point of the contest hit the upright and bounced backward. That pretty much sums up the kicking situation in Bronco land.
Fans could be heard griping about the unsure foot work of the Bronco kickers as they left the stadium. It has to be frustrating for Bronco fans.
The Broncos will certainly be working on the kicking game a lot this year.
Field Goals and Extra Points:
1. Dan Goodale
2. Jake Van Ginkel
Punts:
1. Trevor Harman
2. Zee dog (okay maybe not)
