Cam Johnson to 49ers: Video Highlights, Scouting Report and Analysis

Adam OdekirkJun 7, 2018

According to the rankings published by NFLDraftScout.com, Cam Johnson was a top-100 prospect in the 2012 draft. However, as a testament to the depth of the defensive linemen and ends, he was the 10th-ranked end in the class.

Johnson has been impressive since transitioning to defensive end from linebacker at Virginia, wreaking havoc for the Cavaliers defense. Although his numbers were not gaudy in 2011 (30 tackles, four sacks), the Johnson had on the defense as a whole was apparent.

His size and strength caused problems for most offensive lines, and allowed him to get consistent pressure on the quarterback. Still, lingering concerns about hip issues and old injuries could impact Johnson's effectiveness at the next level.

Brad Noel from CBSSports breaks down the strengths and weaknesses of Cam Johnson this way:

"

Strengths: Tremendous explosion, accelerates low with power. Relentless blindside pursuit, tracks down ball carriers on the other side of the field. Excellent wide and bull rushes when quick off the snap.

Weaknesses: Doesn't change directions well. Can be late off the snap. Has a history of serious injuries, including knee and pectoral. Needs more pass rush moves beyond wide and bull.

"

The need for quality pass-rushers is a strong one in the pass-happy NFL, and Johnson could fit the need very well. He may need more time before he becomes an every-down DE, but he could be a very strong contributor to a rotational defensive line right away.

Pick Analysis:

Cam Johnson fell all the way into the 7th round because of a sickle cell disease, but if he's healthy, will be a valuable contributor for the 49ers. Will likely play on two feet as an OLB in Vic Fangio's 3-4 scheme.
