Marquez vs. Fedchenko: What's Next for Marquez After Convincing Victory?
Juan Manuel Marquez needs an opponent to fight this summer, and his options aren’t that great.
The Mexico City native (54-6, 39 KO) soundly defeated Serhiy Fedchenko (30-2, 13 KO) on Saturday night in his hometown in front of over 22,000 screaming fans.
Marquez was forced into the aggressor role, which was a good strategy for Fedchenko, but it ultimately didn’t work out. Marquez used his pin-point accuracy to land more than enough jabs to secure the 119-109, 118-110, 118-110 win.
At the age of 38, he still has plenty of gas left in the tank, and it appears that the three-time weight division champion wants another shot at Manny Pacquiao. In fact, according to Oppsoingviews.com, the two camps have already engaged in a discussion:
"Last week, as we noted on Opposing Views, Marquez’s people reportedly met with Pacquiao’s people in Mexico City to discuss a prospective showdown. While the specifics of what was talked about haven’t leaked yet, given the history involved, it’s tough to envision anything coming up that would disrupt this thing getting put together. Marquez will sacrifice anything. Pacquiao’s options are limited. Bob Arum seems to be behind it. And Saturday’s end result took away the only excuse anyone had to not make it happen.
Buckle in, folks – Pacquiao vs. Marquez IV appears imminent.
"
I don’t understand why Pac-Man would want another bout. He should have lost Round 3 and would likely fall this time around. He has absolutely nothing to prove. Obviously, Marquez wants another chance, but I’d be shocked to see Pacquiao agree to another match.
Floyd Mayweather maybe?
That’s the problem with boxing right now. After Pac-Man and Money May, there is a second tier of stars that features only Marquez. There isn’t another boxer that is really on Marquez’s level right now.
Some have suggested a bout against either Brandon Rios or Mercito Gesta at Cowboys Stadium on July 14th. Marquez would be heavily favored in both matches.
Marquez doesn’t have a ton of options anymore, and it will be interesting to see if Pacquiao gives him another shot.
For now, Marquez will be forced to sit back and watch other matches unfold to see where he stand in the boxing hierarchy.
