WWE Needs to Use Managers to Get Young Talent Over

Bill PivetzMay 31, 2018

During the 80s and early 90s, managers were a heavily-used part in storylines. Managers were the voice of many superstars and added an extra element to the superstar. They helped out their client any way they could.

Whether it was with interference, distractions or something else, managers did all they could for their superstar to get over.

A list of some of the managers were Paul Bearer, Mr. Fuji, Bobby Heenan, Jimmy Hart, Ted DiBiase, Paul Ellering, Jim Cornette, Captain Lou Albano and Freddie Blassie.

I could go on and on, but the point is that WWE liked managers and with good reason. However, males weren't the only ones who could manage. Valets were also an important part to WWE (WWF at the time). Sunny, Sensational Sherri, Miss Elizabeth, Marlena and Sable were some of the valets seen at ringside.

There was some use of managers a few years ago, but not so much now. Paul Heyman, Stephanie McMahon, Teddy Long and Armando Estrada were some of the non-wrestlers used on screen. The only managers I see on screen now are Vickie Guerrero and Ricardo Rodriguez.

There are some wrestlers who could benefit from having a manager at ringside.

On the Raw roster, guys like Tyler Reks and Mason Ryan could grab the attention of fans if they remained silent while someone talked for them. As for SmackDown, The Great Khali could use a manager again. He was paired with Daivari and Ranjin Singh, but has since been seen alone.

The team of Jey and Jimmy Uso would be the version of the early Hardys with someone as a mouthpiece. They could go to the ring, beat their opponents, then leave while their manager talks for their actions.

As a kid, I enjoyed booing the antics of heel managers like Heyman, Hart, Heenan and such. They added a new factor for the babyface to overcome and gave the heel the advantage. It's an easy way to put some heat on the heel superstar. The face gets a pretty good pop when he finally gets his hand on the manager.

It's a simple plan that is rarely used by the WWE. They could capitalize on the heat that Vickie Guerrero gets every night from the live crowd. WWE needs some more heels for the fans to hate.
