Buffalo Bills: 2012 NFL Draft Figures to Be a Mystery

Greg MaiolaJun 7, 2018

When the Buffalo Bills were ready to announce their 2010 pick, many fans were not prepared to hear C.J. Spiller's name called. Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey were sure to make the "safe" pick, like Jimmy Clausen or Dan Williams, but opted for the best player available.

Though shocked and confused, fans were not upset that Spiller was now a Buffalo Bill. He joined a crowded backfield, with Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch, but added another dimension to the offense.

With numerous options heading into the 2012 draft, things are as wide open as 2010. And with the No. 10 pick, the Bills have a lot of flexibility.

If the Bills want to provide quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick with more targets, there are some good options. Michael Floyd out of Notre Dame is a top prospect for his position. Floyd is a big target who should be ready to immediately help an NFL squad. According to NFL.com, he is graded as a 89.5 recruit, which ranks him among the top prospects of this draft.

If Floyd is not available, there is a chance that Justin Blackmon will be. He is the other big-time receiver in the 2012 NFL Draft and would immediately contribute to the Bills offense. Blackmon is graded as a 93.5 recruit by NFL.com, the best for a receiver. Some believe that Floyd is the better wideout; some believe that distinction belongs to Blackmon.

If the Bills are content with their receivers, or Floyd and Blackmon are unavailable at pick No. 10, there are plenty of other options.

The offensive line can use some help and the Bills have been linked to offensive tackle Riley Reiff out of Iowa. The NFL.com has him rated as an 89.0 recruit, making him one of the top linemen.

Though there were only three offensive options listed above, there are and will be several more offensive options as the draft approaches.

Although at this point in time, Reiff is a realistic option in the first round, there are options on defense if the Bills go that route.

Pass-rusher Melvin Ingram, out of South Carolina, could drop to Buffalo. Ingram is graded a 90.5 by NFL.com, proving he is an impact player. If Ingram doesn't drop, more options do exist.

Linebacker Luke Kuechly out of Boston College should be there. Perhaps Nick Perry of USC or Dont'a Hightower of Alabama are interesting the Bills. Who knows? There are plenty of options and possibilities.

The 2012 NFL Draft is loaded with talent, good prospects and plenty of choices. Coming off an impressive 2011 rookie class, Buffalo figures to add more talent this year as well. No matter what direction the Bills plan to go—and there are several options—Bills Nation must put their faith in Nix and Gailey.

And what will make things exciting on April 26 is that fans have no clue what name Roger Goodell will introduce as a Buffalo Bill at the No. 10 pick.
