Big Ten Football Morning Coffee: Spring Time for Huskers Is a Washout
Nebraska's spring game was rained out yesterday, and that's a tremendous disappointment for the tens of thousands of paid attendees who braved the weather to show up at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The possibility of moving the game to Sunday was considered but quickly nixed, and basically that's that for the spring.
Indiana and Purdue were also victims of the weather, with both teams' spring games forced inside on Saturday. According to the team's website, Indiana had a solid day from RB Isaiah Roundtree, who broke several big runs and will be pushing incumbent starter Stephen Houston for playing time this year.
Meanwhile, Rob Marve and Caleb TerBush both looked like starting-caliber QBs for Purdue, according to Caleb Martin, and there's really no telling how that situation shakes out at this point.
Illinois had 3,000 fans brave the weather for its spring game, a 13-12 win for the Blue over the Orange. Neither offensive unit looked particularly sharp, but the Chicago Sun-Times noted some interesting developments in the team's offensive depth, including a Kain Colter-esque performance from Miles Osei: 8-of-12 passing for 115 yards, seven rushes and four receptions.
Northwestern's spring game pitted the offense and defense against each other with college football's equivalent of the Stableford scoring system, and the defense took away a 47-43 victory with a late stop. The real statistic of note, per Kevin Trahan: 47 yards rushing allowed on 36 carries. That 1.3 yards per carry won't get it done for Northwestern this season, and even tripling that is still only marginally successful.
