One of Manny Pacquiao's Last Two Fights Could Include Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao is looking at two more opponents after his upcoming fight with Timothy Bradley on June 9 before finally retiring from boxing to continue a more challenging career in politics.
One of the two possible opponents, who is the most desired by millions of fight fans around the world, is unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. The other is Mexican counter-puncher Juan Manuel Marquez, who is fresh off his victory over Serhiy Fedchenko last night in Mexico City.
The other reason for his early retirement apart from politics, Pacquiao also talked about his Bible crusade, which was borne out of his imminent acceptance as a "Bible ambassador" of the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines.
Pacquiao has seemingly discovered that boxing is no longer relevant to his short- to medium-term political plans as it entails full-time training commitment that he can no longer do once he assumes an executive position in government.
Pacquiao has recently bared his plan to run for governor of the province of Sarangani in next year's May elections. It is a common knowledge he has plans for higher political positions after his stint as governor of his province.
After a three-year term as governor, Pacquiao may run for a Senate seat in preparation for a higher position after the 2016 national elections. A Senate position has a nationwide constituency, which he badly needs for his ultimate political plan.
It may be recalled that while on a press tour in Mexico City for his recent fight with Marquez, he announced his plan to run for vice president of the Philippines, but the statement was immediately qualified as he has not yet reached the age of qualification under the constitution.
Bob Arum, Pacquiao's long-time promoter, told examiner com the eight-division champion can't go into training camp with his hands tied in local governance.
"Yeah, it's one thing to be a congressman and continue fighting; it's another thing when you are a governor because you have executive responsibilities and you can't go into training camp," Arum said. "Unlike his current role as congressman of Sarangani, he must be serious about duties in the local level as governor which I believe he can do well."
Arum also said he will not promote the upcoming Pacquiao-Bradley fight as Pacquiao's last fight, saying Pacquiao had not told him June 9 would be his last fight.
"If Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is not available to fight Pacquiao this November, then we'll do the Pacquiao-Marquez fight, and only if Juan Manuel Marquez wins against whoever his opponent would be on July 9," Arum said.
Arum continued: "Manny (Pacquiao) may have one more fight in early spring just before the May 2013 elections of the Philippines."
