TNA Lockdown: 10 Things We Learned from Tonight's PPV

David LevinJun 4, 2018

It may not have been WrestleMania 28, but TNA still was able to put together a pretty good PPV at Lockdown tonight.

From the opening bell, matches ran the gamut of good and bad, but mostly pretty good in terms of action and substance. And while it wasn't the Super Bowl the WWE put together two weeks ago, it was great to see matches that meant something to Impact Wrestling.

The night started with a "moral" victory by Garett Bischoff and ended with a win by Bobby Roode while being super kicked. And in between, we saw a fire burn in both Jeff Hardy and Kurt Angle, the chemistry of the the Motor City Machine Guns in a loss and the need for there to be more Bobby Roode and James Storm in the near future.

And most certainly more Knockout's matches if any are like the battle between Gail Kim and my girl Velvet Sky.

Here is what we learned from tonight's performances.

The Opening Montage Was Awesome

1 of 10

Another page from the NWA. Both Roode and Storm were highlighted like they were two souls on a collision course.

The opening talked about their hopes and dreams. It talked about their friendship and the hatred Bobby Roode created between them.

And in the end, you could tell the match would be the biggest one of TNA's existence.

The 5-on-5 Match Lived Up to Its Potential

2 of 10

Although the ending was predictable, I think the five-on-five "War Games" style match lived up to its hype.

While the players may not have been as cohesive as they could have been, Bully Ray, Kazarian, AJ Styles, RVD and Garett Bischoff, amongst others, helped the match live up to its potential.

Garett beat daddy Eric in the end with a guitar shot a la Honky Tonk Man, and Eric sold it like he could only do.

That set the tone for the rest of the night.

The Swanton Bomb Rocked the Wrestling World Tonight

3 of 10

All you had to do was see it.

Jeff Hardy used the Swanton Bomb from the top of the ring and the cage to deliver a crushing blow and earn the win.

Finally.

Hardy did not win the World Title because of Angle, and he was finally able to capitalize. If it were any other night, that would have been the main event. But it may have been the best match of the night.

Magnus and Samoa Joe Are Pretty Amazing

4 of 10

With a match against the Motor City Machine Guns, Samoa Joe and Magnus proved they are still the baddest tag team in TNA.

And the Motor Machine Guns still looked great in the loss.

While they have not been in the ring together for an extended period of time since Chris Sabin came back from a knee injury, the team came together (with Alex Shelley) to prove they still had it.

It was vintage MCMGs, but in the end, the power and strength of Samoa Joe and Magnus was just too much.

Velvet Sky Was Robbed

5 of 10

Again.

I like the idea that TNA wants the titles on champions for longer reigns, but Velvet Sky deserves to have the title.

Kim got a hold of some tights and gained the win. It was the first time Velvet Sky got a rematch since losing the belt to Gail Kim last year.

We shall see if Velvet gets another title shot or if the company decides to move forward with another program.

Matt Morgan and Crimson in a Match Is Not a Good Thing

6 of 10

When two really big men get in a ring that appears to be very small for their size, it never turns out good.

This was the case with Crimson and Matt Morgan. The two looked robotic and slow and, well, awful.

Hopefully, this means we will not see this feud continue.

We Need to See Devon in a Match with Bully Ray for the Television Title

7 of 10

This would do two things.

First, it would mean the Television Title would be legit, and secondly, seeing the two former tag partners compete would make the fans happy.

Bully Ray hasn't won the World Title yet, but winning this title may mean he takes another step forward in that quest.

Devon won and retained his title in the match against Robbie E. But honestly, the match was weak and needed more to it before Robbie T came in after Devon got the win.

This title is still going nowhere.

There Would Be Blood

8 of 10

Nothing is better than seeing blood in an event like this.

And having both Bobby Roode and James Storm bleed was way cool.

Many different matches and this was the only one where there was anyone shedding red?

Come on. We deserved better.

You Live by the Kick, You Die by the Kick

9 of 10

James Storm's misfortune left us all in disbelief.

He super kicked Bobby Roode through the door—thus giving Roode the win.

The match was pretty damn good. And the two men battled like champions, beating the hell out of each other and proving they could bring the house down in Tennessee.

After having his ass handed to him in the early part of the match, Storm mounted a great offense but lost in the end.

The kick that won him the title before proved to be his downfall.

Hogan and Creative Looked Good Putting Together Matches

10 of 10

It looks like this company is still moving forward. Again, they cannot compete with the likes of the WWE, so why should they try?

TNA is a niche company that caters to those who do not like the cartoonish ways of the WWE, and with the background of the old NWA, this is a way to bring back supporters of the NWA and WCW.

If they continue to move forward, why can't they enjoy more success? There will be other PPV events. There are great wrestlers who are challenging for the World Title. The promotion of Bully Ray and Austin Aries aides this progress.

It should continue. And it should be better, leading to greatness.
