RBC Heritage 2012: Boo Weekley and More Who Will Pass Colt Knost on Leaderboard

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Colt Knost entered the third round with a lead in a tournament he is not going to win. The 26-year-old is going to watch players like Boo Weekley soar past him on the leaderboard as he struggles while they excel.

Knost does not have the experience to hold his play together for four rounds with these kinds of players chasing. He turned pro in 2007 and since then, he has 69 events under his belt. He has only made the cut in 33 of those events.

He has been in the top 25 just four times, and in top 10 just once. These facts are not thrown out here to trash Knost or to say he will never win, just that he is not ready to win this tournament.

Knost, currently ranked 366th in the world, has been making some improvements. In February of this year he had a career best third place finish at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, and he has made the cut in six of his eight events this season.

It is pretty clear he is starting to figure out his game in a way that will lead to PGA success. Ultimately, this will be another learning step in that progression. But as far as the present is concerned, it will just be a failure as he turns a two-shot, two-round lead into another finish back with the back.

While Knost is busy not contending for this title on Sunday, here are some who will.

Boo Weekley

Weekley has had an up and down season, but he is slowly turning the corner. He did not have a finish higher than 71 over his first four events.

This is his fifth event since that horrendous start. In the four leading up to this he has a T3, and is coming in off of a T14th in the Houston Open.

Weekley was rock solid over the first two rounds, and that was good enough to have him just three shots off the lead.

He will continue that solid play and will be there contending for his third career PGA win on Sunday.

Matt Kuchar

If there is any wonder how Matt Kuchar—a player who has never won a major—could lead the tour in earnings multiple times, just take a look at his last two weeks.

Kuchar finished T3 at the Masters. That is a finish that would lead to most golfers taking some time off. Not Kuchar. He turned right around, packed his clubs for the RBC, and is once again in contention.

Kuchar began the third round eight shots off the lead. He is currently three-under through 12 holes and is now just four shots back. That is what he does. Somehow, someway he always manages to work himself into contention.

He has 44 top 10 finishes in his career and just three wins. A third place finish here sounds about right.

Zach Johnson

Johnson is turning in a solid year. He is 9-for-9 in cuts made and has four top 10s. He has been consistent and steady.

He is ready to take that play up a notch. Johnson began the third round six shots back of Knost. He is two-under through six holes and is now just three shots back.

Johnson knows how to win and he knows how to close a tournament. He is striking and putting the ball well, and he will leave the rest of the field behind as he closes out Sunday for his eighth PGA tournament win.
