UFC on Fuel 2 Results: What's Next for Each Fighter?
The UFC's first visit to Sweden was a success Saturday, providing fans with exciting fights and hometown heroes to root for.
The judges had an easy day, as almost every fight came by a finish. The fighters brought it Saturday, showing their skill and passion for the sport.
What's next for each fighter on the card? Let's take a look.
Eric Wisely
1 of 23Eric Wisely is now 0-2 so far in the UFC, dropping his fight against Jason Young Saturday afternoon. It would not surprise me if he were cut following this loss, as he also has a loss in Strikeforce.
Should Wisely stick around, there are few options for the scrappy veteran. Nam Phan is coming off a loss as well and is currently not scheduled to fight. Have these two meet up, with the winner keeping his job.
Jason Young
2 of 23Jason Young finally got his first UFC win, putting on an impressive performance in his decision victory over Eric Wisely. With the win, Young saved his job, which was definitely on the line.
Young is young, talented and exciting. The featherweight division has a lot of fights to offer, but his development must be taken cautiously. A fight with Issei Tamura, who is coming off a win in his UFC debut, would definitely be an appropriate matchup. Tamura has a lot of power in his hands, and Young loves to strike.
It's a match made in heaven.
Besam Yousef
3 of 23Besam Yousef definitely surprised me in his UFC debut, showing good power and heads up ground work. Unfortunately, it did not materialize in a victory.
The welterweight division is extremely crowded, so a win in his next fight may be necessary. A loser-leave-town match will probably be in the cards, so a bout with Mike Stumpf may be fitting.
Simeon Thoresen
4 of 23Simeon Thoresen's ground game was on display this afternoon, showing great knowledge and skill in his submission win over Besam Yousef.
Thoresen looks like he has a bright future in the UFC, but he needs to clean up his striking. He is still in development, so a bout with fellow prospect Mark Scanlon would be a good test for both men.
Yoislandy Izquierdo
5 of 23Yoislandy Izquierdo went out there this afternoon and showed skills against a very experienced Reza Madadi. The Cuban showed great striking and an exciting fight style in his losing effort.
He may have lost, but he definitely impressed. The lightweight division is loaded, so finding a fight will not be hard. A fight against Eiji Mitsuoka, who is also coming off a loss in his debut, would be a good fit to see who sticks around the UFC and who leaves.
Reza Madadi
6 of 23Reza Madadi made his UFC debut a successful one Saturday afternoon, submitting Yoislandy Izquierdo with a beautiful guillotine choke.
Madadi has proven to be ready for the big show. Coming into this fight, he had beaten three UFC veterans in a row. In his next fight, Madadi should face a fellow veteran like Dennis Hallman, in what could be a great grappling war.
Magnus Cedenblad
7 of 23Despite dropping his UFC debut, Magnus Cedenblad looked impressive against Francis Carmont. He showed off a solid ground game throughout the fight, which almost won him the fight in the first round.
Unfortunately, almost doesn't get the job done. Cedenblad is a promising prospect, but he definitely needs to win his next bout to stay employed. Throw him in the cage against fellow European Michael Kuiper and have them fight to keep their jobs.
Francis Carmont
8 of 23Francis Carmont got the job done Saturday afternoon, putting away a very game Magnus Cedenblad with brutal ground and pound, as well as a rear naked choke.
Carmont looks like he is legit. In both fights so far, he has shown a well-rounded game that can compete with anybody in the division. A bout with former light heavyweight Luiz Cane would be a great test for Carmont and serve as an exciting affair.
Tom DeBlass
9 of 23Tom DeBlass looked like he suffered from his late notice weight cut, fading down the stretch versus Cyrille Diabate. Up until the point that he got tired, DeBlass showcased his excellent grappling skills.
I personally think that he could stand to lose some belly fat and drop to middleweight. Assuming he stays in the light heavyweight division, there are not a lot of fights to take. Putting him in the cage with fellow 0-1 fighter Nick Penner could work well, as the loser would have to leave the UFC.
Cyrille Diabate
10 of 23Cyrille Diabate got back on track Saturday, showing off an improved ground game against Tom DeBlass. Although he gained a victory, he is still a long way away from a title shot.
Diabate's original opponent was Jorgen Kruth, who similarly has an excellent striking regiment. A fight between Diabate and Kruth would be an exciting, fan-friendly affair, so it should happen.
Papy Abedi
11 of 23Things are not looking good for Papy Abedi, who is now 0-2 in his UFC career. There is a good chance that he will be cut after this fight, dropping his second straight fight by submission.
Should Abedi stick around, he is in a must-win situation. A fight against David Mitchell, who is also 0-2, could decide who sticks around and who is let go by the promotion.
Damacio Page
12 of 23Damacio Page put on an exciting performance in his return to the Octagon but still walked out a loser Saturday. It would not be a shock if Page were cut, as this is his third straight loss under the Zuffa banner.
Should he stick around, he is in dire need of a win. Assuming Kid Yamamoto is still with the promotion, he could fight Page next, with the loser getting the ax and the winner staying with the UFC.
Brad Pickett
13 of 23Brad Pickett got back in the win column Saturday, tapping out Damacio Page with the help of his striking skills. Pickett is still a top bantamweight in the promotion, so he will find a tough opponent in his next outing.
A bout against former champion Brian Bowles would serve as a great bout on any card. Both men are top fighters in the division, so it could provide us a future title contender.
DaMarques Johnson
14 of 23Saturday was not DaMarques Johnson's day, falling to an armbar submission at the hands of John Maguire. He was competitive in the fight, but this is a devastating loss for "Darkness."
Johnson needs to get back on track in his next fight. A fight against fellow Ultimate Fighter veteran Rich Attonito would be a food fight for both men and see who the better man is.
James Head/John Maguire
15 of 23James Head made a successful welterweight debut Saturday, showing good striking and submission skills in his victory over Papy Abedi. It will be interesting to see where Head goes from here.
John Maguire showed off his brilliant ground game against DaMarques Johnson, clinching the bout with a slick armbar. Maguire is now 2-0 in the UFC, showing that he is a force to be reckoned with.
Head and Maguire should fight each other next to see who continues his way up the ladder. Both men were impressive Saturday, so this bout could definitely be in the works.
Diego Nunes
16 of 23Despite losing, Diego Nunes looked pretty good Saturday. He was outworked and outmuscled by Dennis Siver, who used to fight at lightweight.
Nunes has shuffled wins and losses in the Octagon. He is still a top featherweight in my eyes, so a big drop off is not in the works. A fight against fellow striker Erik Koch could be an exciting fight, while giving both men a respectable opponent.
Dennis Siver
17 of 23Dennis Siver made a successful featherweight debut today, showing no signs of a tough weight cut. Siver showed superior striking against Nunes, which is never an easy thing to do.
Siver has made his mark in the featherweight division and will be awaiting a top level opponent. A rematch with fellow former lightweight Ross Pearson would be an exciting affair and show who is ready for a title shot at 145 pounds.
Paulo Thiago
18 of 23Saturday's loss was devastating for Paulo Thiago, who simply got caught coming in with a combination. Despite this loss, Thiago is still a top welterweight in the UFC.
He is going to need a fight to get back on track here, as Saturday's loss pushed him down the ladder. A fight against the loser of John Hathaway and Pascal Krauss could be in line for Thiago, as he would be against another guy in need of a win, who is also a respectable opponent.
Siyar Bahadurzada
19 of 23Blink and you missed it. Siyar Bahadurzada's knockout of Paulo Thiago was as brilliant as it was devastating.
Bahadurzada is as legit as they come, so a fight against a top opponent could be in the cards for the Afghan. A fight versus Diego Sanchez would be a great fight for the fans and would prove if Bahadurzada is legit or not.
Alessio Sakara
20 of 23Saturday's loss could be the last in a UFC Octagon for Alessio Sakara, as the oft-injured Italian was brutally knocked out by Brian Stann.
I think that he should stick around for one more fight, as he has proven exciting and game most of the time. A bout against Tim Creudeur would be a nice challenge for both men, with the loser exiting the UFC.
Brian Stann
21 of 23Brian Stann got back in the win column Saturday, showing off brutal power against Alessio Sakara. With his continued work on his ground game, he will be a force to be reckoned with from here on out.
Stann has some options here. This win definitely will give him a shot against a top middleweight. A fight against the winner of Alan Belcher and Rousimar Palhares would be a nice option for the former Marine.
Thiago Silva
22 of 23Thiago Silva lost the main event Saturday in his comeback fight. In my opinion, he followed a poor game plan in which he should have taken the fight to the ground.
Silva needs a win in his next fight. A bout against Stanislav Nedkov, who has not fought since the UFC's return to Brazil, could be in the cards. Both men are heavy-handed brawlers who can excite a crowd.
Alexander Gustafsson
23 of 23Alexander Gustafsson proved tonight that he is one of the top contenders in the light heavyweight division. I'll admit, I was not convinced that he was as good as the hype said, but I can respectfully say I was wrong.
Gustafsson is a fight or two away from a title shot. Dan Henderson is probably next in line, so Gustafsson will need to find another opponent. A fight against another recent winner, Ryan Bader, could be in the cards to see who is the next top contender.
