Georgia Football: What to Look for in the Bulldog Spring Game

Barrett SalleeJun 7, 2018

The Georgia Bulldogs wrap up spring practice on Saturday when they hit the field at Sanford Stadium on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET for the annual G-Day Game.

Head coach Mark Richt has his team poised to make a run at the BCS Championship this season, but that doesn't mean that this year's team is without some question marks.

Here are a few of the key storylines to keep an eye on Saturday between the hedges:

What Will the Secondary Look Like?

Wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell is expected to play both ways when toe meets leather this fall. He has been working exclusively at cornerback this spring, but is unlikely to play on Saturday. Three of Georgia's starters in the secondary—cornerback Sanders Commings, safety Bacarri Rambo and cornerback Branden Smith—will be suspended to start the season.

Needless to say, there are some issues in the Bulldog defensive backfield

Starting strong safety Shawn Williams injured his knee last weekend and is also doubtful for Saturday. It'll be interesting to see how defensive coordinator Todd Grantham mixes in some of the younger players like safety Corey Moore and cornerbacks Damian Swann and Blake Sailors into the lineups at G-Day.

Georgia plays at Missouri the second week of the season, so Grantham needs to figure this out sooner rather than later.

How Will the Offensive Line Look?

Georgia lost three starters off last season's offensive line. Offensive line coach Will Friend told The Red and Black Kenarious Gates and Kolton Houston will start at tackle, Chris Burnette and Dallas Lee will start at guard and David Andrews will start at center. Gates and Burnette are the only two starters returning from last year's group, so developing some familiarity with the new guys is going to be crucial to the success of Georgia's offense.

Who's Going to be the Back-up Quarterback?

Junior Aaron Murray is the unquestioned starter, and fellow junior Hutson Mason is expecting to take a redshirt this season. So who's going to be Murray's backup? The smart money is on redshirt freshman Christian LeMay, who was the eighth-ranked quarterback in the country in 2011, according to Scout.com. Behind LeMay, sophomore Parker Welsh and freshman Faton Bauta are vying to be Murray's backup.

If Georgia can't settle on a backup, it'll be interesting to see if Richt and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo abandon the idea of redshirting Mason.
