EPL Rumors: Tottenham to Sell Bale or Modric If They Miss Champions League

Christopher HallApr 13, 2012

Tottenham will look to sell either Gareth Bale or Luka Modric if they miss a second straight year of Champions League football, according to a report by Goal.com.

The report cites concerns over UEFA's looming financial fair play regulations as lying at the heart of Spurs' decision.

Harry Redknapp's team barely managed to hold onto Modric last summer as Chelsea came in strongly for him. But keeping the player came at the price of significant bad blood.

Modric accused Tottenham CEO Daniel Levy of breaking a "gentleman's agreement" between the two that would have allowed a move to a club like Chelsea. He also accused Levy of threatening to have him benched if he didn't quietly accept the club's decision not to sell.

The Croatian midfielder has provided the creative catalyst in Spurs midfield since arriving at the club in 2008.

For his part, Bale took the world stage by storm with his performances during the 2011 Champions League competition.

As a result, the Welshman is high on the transfer wish lists for Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

At the beginning of the month, the winger indicated that he would be hard put to refuse a move to Spain (from The Sun):

"

If you are talking about Barcelona or Real Madrid, two of the biggest clubs in the world, then it’s a bit like Harry and England, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime dream. If you said to any young player that you could play for Barcelona or Real would they turn it down? Probably not.

"

Either Bale or Modric has been involved in more than 42 percent of Tottenham's league goals this season.

Spurs currently sit fourth in the table thanks to goal differential. But they are even on points with Alan Pardew's hard-charging Newcastle side.

The Londoners will have to dramatically reverse their recent form to hold off the Toon. Newcastle have won their last five matches, while Tottenham have managed just one win in their last eight games.
