Ohio State Football Recruiting: A Closer Look at the Buckeyes' Latest Commit
Southern Cal tight end Marcus Baugh became the eighth member of Urban Meyer's recruiting class for 2013 after announcing his verbal commitment last Tuesday, according to ESPN.
The 6'4", 230-pound athlete wasted no time stating his expectations with his role on the team.
"I felt like it was the best place for me," said Baugh. "I want to play under Urban Meyer. I love the way he’s going to use me…like Aaron Hernandez."
With words like that comes high expectations from Buckeye fans. Hernandez, a former Gator under Meyer and current starter for the New England Patriots, thrived in the spread-option offense. He totaled 102 receptions through his junior and senior seasons, racking up 1,231 yards and 10 touchdowns.
As a junior in high school, Baugh caught 30 balls for 528 yards and seven touchdowns in a similar spread attack. He was a dangerous red zone threat and turned heads with his ability to create separation from defenders.
Baugh seems like the type of player that will blossom in Meyer's offensive scheme. He has all the right assets to become a big-time playmaker with the Buckeyes, possessing the size, strength and versatility to disrupt the secondary.
Looking at the highlight tape provided, it's a no-brainer that Baugh is a perfect fit for Ohio State's new game plan. What makes it even more exciting is that the target on his back will open up other options, which provides more downfield plays for Braxton Miller and company.
"I'm kind of like a hybrid," Baugh told CBSSports.com. "I'm pretty much a big receiver but I can block along the line. I can pretty much do whatever a receiver can."
Although he'll have to do some run blocking here and there, Baugh—just like Hernandez—will be utilized in the passing game.
And that's exactly what Meyer and the Buckeyes are looking for.
