Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Sergey Fedchenko: Marquez Will Make Mexico City Proud

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

Ukrainian fighter Sergey Fedchenko has a sterling 30-1 record, but he's never faced a boxer like Juan Manuel Marquez, and he is heading into Marquez's home territory, Mexico City.

Fedchenko, who has scored 13 knockouts in his career, is your typical European boxer. He will jab from behind his gloves and try to control the action, and he has good fundamental boxing skills.

But controlling the action against a future Hall of Famer is easier said than done. If he presses the action against Marquez or simply stays within striking range, it could be a short night for the 31-year-old.

Marquez's counter-punching ability and boxing skills will overwhelm Fedchenko. He's shown his worth throughout his career, sporting a 53-6-1 record. Many believed he won his last fight against Manny Pacquiao. And he has the heart to match Fedchenko's determination.

Beyond that, Marquez is fighting in Mexico City for the first time in 18 years. It will be a celebrated homecoming for a boxer who has seen his career flourish since then.

In an emotional news conference, Marquez said, via FightingNews.com:

"

“Eighteen years ago I had my last fight in Mexico City, and since that time wonderful things have happened to my career and now I have the opportunity to return and with a large load of good vibes for everyone. This excites me and motivates me to give more than all of my abilities in the ring."

"

There is also the prospect of facing Pacquiao a fourth time if Marquez beats Fedchenko.

Marquez added:

"

"Everyone knows over and over that I won all three fights with Pacquiao, but now more than ever I want the fourth fight with him, and I have the full backing of Zanfer and Fernando Beltran to achieve this, but first I have to defeat the Ukrainian.”

"

Fedchenko will not be able to control the action against Marquez amid what is likely to be a buzzing Mexico City crowd. He also doesn't have the power or the speed to make it a close bout.

This frankly isn't much of a challenge for Marquez, as much as this fight is being hyped. This is a warm-up for Pacquiao.
