SEC Football Q&A: Who Are Some Legitimate SEC Heisman Contenders?

Barrett SalleeJun 7, 2018

Every Thursday on The SEC Blog, we will feature questions from the B/R inbox, Twitter and email.  Do you have a question for next week's Q&A?  Send it to SEC Lead Blogger Barrett Sallee via the B/R inbox, on Twitter @BarrettSallee or at bsallee@bleacherreport.com.

From FSR Chattanooga (@FSR Chattanooga) on Twitter: Are [Aaron] Murray and [Tyler] Wilson expected to get legit pushes for Heisman? Anyone else?

Yes, Aaron Murray and Tyler Wilson are absolutely in the mix to win the Heisman Trophy. Despite all of the upheaval in Fayetteville, I'd go as far to say that Wilson is one of the favorites. The one thing that he has to worry about is splitting votes with his teammate, running back Knile Davis.

Murray may be a little farther back in the Heisman pecking order. He's losing his best offensive weapon Malcolm Mitchell (at least on a part-time basis) to his defense, so that will certainly hurt. But Tavarres King had a great Outback Bowl and may mature into a big-time weapon before all is said and done.

South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore tops my list of Heisman favorites. He's already established himself as a stud in the SEC. If he has recovered 100 percent from his knee injury, he'll be in New York.

Davis, Tyrann Mathieu, A.J. McCarron, James Franklin, Tyler Bray, Justin Hunter and Eddie Lacy all could jump in that mix; but I'd put them on the periphery at this point.

From Tim Stidham (@tjstidham14) in reference to Garrick McGee being my top choice for Arkansas' new head coach: Do we really want his first head coach job to be in the SEC?

Ideally, no—but Arkansas isn't exactly in the ideal situation at the moment. The biggest thing for Arkansas right now is to minimize the disruption that a coaching change inevitably brings. McGee is far enough away from the situation to be a breath of fresh air, but close enough to keep things going in the direction that they've been going in for the last few seasons.

Now isn't the time to worry about experience or perception. It's all about being "the right guy for the job," and McGee is it.

From Brent Matheny via email: How serious should I take this Butch Davis to Arkansas rumor?

I would treat it with more than one grain of salt, but I wouldn't seriously consider him a candidate despite his ties to the region and the program. Davis wasn't mentioned in the North Carolina's notice of allegations from the NCAA, but the concern is still there for athletic directors across the county. I wouldn't completely discount the idea, but I wouldn't get hung up on it either.
