Andre Drummond: UConn Star Reportedly Set to Declare for NBA Draft
Andre Drummond will leave Connecticut after just one season and declare for the NBA Draft, according to Dom Amore of the Hartford Courant. The report comes just a few days after fellow Huskies star Jeremy Lamb chose to make the jump as well.
Drummond was a highly-touted recruit coming out of high school, but his college results were mixed. He immediately became a dominant defensive force, blocking nearly three shots per game and altering countless more. The 6'10'' center also held his own on the glass.
His performance on the offensive end was far less promising.
He averaged 10 points per game, but a handful of them came off rebounds. Eventually he will need to add more post moves to his arsenal to become a complete NBA player. A more reliable mid-range game would also help.
Then there's the issue of shooting free throws. Drummond shot a dreadful 30 percent from the line, and teams at the next level will obviously exploit that weakness, meaning he won't be able to see the floor often during crunch time.
That said, his upside is undeniable. His combination of size and athleticism doesn't come around often. And with so many teams in need of help in the paint, he's a virtual lock to be selected in the lottery. NBADraft.net currently projects he'll be selected fourth overall.
Once he gains some NBA experience, he should develop into a useful contributor. The star potential is also there, but it will be a handful of years before he reaches an All-Star level, so fans will need to exercise patience with him.
All told, the Huskies will struggle to replace him and an NBA team will be happy to select him. It's no surprise to see him leave.
