Tony Parker: Handicapping Race to Land Undecided Prep Star

Josh MartinJun 7, 2018

It's national signing day, and Tony Parker still doesn't know where he'll play college basketball next year.

No, not that Tony Parker, the one who plays for the San Antonio Spurs, was married to Eva Longoria and fooled around with Brent Barry's boo.

I'm talking about the 6'9, 280-pound man-child from Miller Grove High School in Lithonia, Georgia. This Tony Parker is slated to appear on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m EDT, though, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, he isn't likely to make a decision on air. Not with seven schools still sitting on his lengthy list of choices.

In the meantime, let's have a look at where each of Parker's potential destinations stands in the race to secure his signature on a National Letter of Intent.

The Old Favorite: Duke

Duke's been on Parker's list for quite some time, and for good reason. After all, it's not every day that a kid gets accosted by a living legend like Mike Krzyzewski and given the chance to play with a perennial powerhouse like Duke. Word is, Parker's pops likes the Blue Devils, in part because they play in the ACC, giving the family opportunities to see their boy play against Georgia Tech every year.

Trouble is, Duke doesn't exactly have the best reputation with regard to preparing big men for the NBA (see: McRoberts, Josh; Williams, Shelden; et al). And, realistically, if Parker were at all enamored by the possibility of playing for Duke, his decision probably would've been made already.

The New Favorite: UCLA

UCLA is the furthest possible destination for Parker geographically, though it may yet be the closest to his heart. Tony still shares a close relationship with Korey McCray, his former AAU coach with the Atlanta Celtics, who just so happens to be an assistant on Ben Howland's staff.

The warm weather and storied basketball history don't hurt the Bruins' case either, though if Parker doesn't wind up in Westwood, it'll likely be on account of distance.

The Fast Faller: Kansas

The Jayhawks were late to the Tony Parker recruiting party, but they managed to establish a strong foothold in the mix thanks to an incredible official visit and a budding tie with former Kansas star and big-men specialist Danny Manning.

Unfortunately for KU, Manning just took the top job at Tulsa. As such, Bill Self will need something of a miracle to lure Parker to Lawrence now. His recent success with the Morris twins, Thomas Robinson and Jeff Withey just might help.

The Dark Horse: Georgia

There's a lot for Tony to like about Georgia—it's relatively local, two of his high school teammates will be there, head coach Mark Fox has a sterling reputation for developing players and his mom is said to favor the Athens-based school. The Bulldogs don't have the tradition of the first three mentioned, but the chance to build something special at a football school could appeal to Parker's sensibilities.

Lackluster fan support is an issue, as is the on-campus arena, but the allure of growing his legend close to home may be too much to turn down.

The Rest: Ohio State, Georgetown, Memphis

These three schools remain on the fringes, though each has a strong case to make for Parker's services. Thad Matta has sent big man after big man to the NBA, with Jared Sullinger serving as his latest prodigy. John Thompson III's had similar success with the likes of Greg Monroe and Roy Hibbert at Georgetown, whose history of producing All-Star centers (i.e. Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo) was already well established.

As for Memphis, Josh Pastner is a recruiting wizard and should have the Tigers back to winning like they did in the John Calipari days before too long.
