The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: 2008 Running Backs (The Good)

Michael WhooleyJan 21, 2009

At the end of every season, we like to go back and recap how the players at each fantasy position fared. And as with every season, there’s always the good, the bad and, of the course, the downright ugly at each and every position.

In this second installment of our "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" series, we’ll take a look at the GOOD running backs this season. One thing you'll notice when looking through this list, 2008 was the year of the rookie runner.

1. Chris Johnson (Tennessee Titans)

Chris Johnson enjoyed one of the better rookie campaigns in the past several years by putting up 1,448 all-purpose yards while accumulating a total of 10 touchdowns on the season. What makes those numbers even more impressive is that he shared his carries with teammate LenDale White.

The Tennessee Titans are an organization that thrives on solid defense and an outstanding running game, so look for his numbers to be similar at the very least next year. Sophomore slumps do happen in the NFL, but because of the luxury that he has with splitting carries, he should remain healthy and strong for 2009. It is safe to say that he more than made up for his No. 45 preseason ranking in the Bruno Boys draft guide.

2. DeAngelo Williams (Carolina Panthers)

What an outstanding year Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams had in 2009. Going into the season he was a man that was possibly without a job as rookie Jonathan Stewart was expected to replace Williams in some eyes as the Panthers lead back. Needless to say, it never happened.

In fact, Williams enjoyed a year that very few running backs have ever achieved and possibly will ever achieve. He was rated at No. 30 for the preseason Bruno Boys rankings, but proved not only us wrong, but every fantasy football guru out there.

A total of 1,636 all-purpose yards as well as a combined 20 touchdowns does not happen every year and may never happen again for Williams. But one thing is for sure, if you owned Williams this past season you definitely had a heads up on your competition in the second half.

3. Michael Turner (Atlanta Falcons)

The Atlanta Falcons signed Michael Turner during last year's offseason in hopes of solidifying their running back position. There were many questions that surrounded him including if he would be able to live up to expectations, if his endurance would suffice and most of all, after being out of LaDainian Tomlinson's shadow, would he be able to produce on a full-time basis.

Let's just say that all the questions were answered with a resounding YES! While he did not play much of a role in the Falcon's passing game, he did put up an outstanding 1,699 rushing yards while punching in the pigskin 17 times. You can guarantee that he will be rated much higher than the No. 17 position that the Bruno Boys gave him going into the regular season.
