The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly: 2008 Quarterbacks (the Good)

Michael WhooleyJan 21, 2009

At the end of every season we like to go back and recap how the players at each fantasy position fared. And as with every season, there’s always the good, the bad and, of the course, the downright ugly at each and every position.

In this first installment of our "The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly" series, we’ll take a look at the GOOD quarterbacks this season.

From the usual players such as Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, to some pleasant surprises such as Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Tyler Thigpen, here’s the guys who either lived up to the hype or exceeded expectations this season.

1. Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints)

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees may have been considered the fourth or fifth best quarterback in fantasy football entering the 2008 season, but he ended it at the top. Brees threw for 5,069 yards, just 15 short of tying Dan Marino’s single-season record, with 34 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

Brees was great because he put up huge numbers but was consistent in doing so with 11 multiple-touchdown games in the season. He also did so while dealing with injuries to his favorite wide receiver in Marques Colston as well as running backs Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister.

2. Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers)

There were many questions surrounding Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the preseason after former starter Brett Favre was traded. But Rodgers answered those questions quickly with four touchdowns and no interceptions in the first two weeks of the season.

He went on to finish with 4,038 yards with 28 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. This is impressive not only because he’s a first-year starter, but also because the Green Bay running game was pretty bad this season, meaning most of the offense’s weight fell on Rodgers’ shoulders.

3. Philip Rivers (San Diego Chargers)

It was believed that San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers would have a good season this year, but with running back LaDainian Tomlinson around, there wouldn’t be enough passing opportunities.

Well, Tomlinson was banged up and a little inconsistent over the course of the season, which opened the door for Rivers to throw for 4,009 yards with 34 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Those three numbers were all career-bests for the fifth-year player.
