Top 12 Sprint Cup Drivers Without a WIN!
Here are the Top 12 drivers in my opinion without a win yet in the their career.
12. David Gilliland
Gilliland has been racing in the Cup Series since 2006. At age 32, Gilliland got his big chance late in his racing career. He has two career poles, two top-fives, four top-10s and finished 27 thin points.
His fate for 2009 has yet to be announced. Will he still have a ride with Yates Racing? No one knows. Rumor has it the answer is no and his points have been switched over to the Hall Of Fame Racing team with Bobby Labonte. His chance to win in the Cup Series could be over.
11. Aric Almirola
Almirola has had a short racing career in the Cup Series, only running on a part-time basis for DEI which, merged with Ganassi to form EGR.
The merge should make the team a lot stronger and solid. It probably will not win, but should fare well. Almirola has one top-10 in 18 starts working with Mark Martin last year definitely couldn't have hurt any.
10. Regan Smith
With only 41 starts and dropping to Furniture Row Racing, and only running 12 races this season, Smith also may not see Victory Lane, and have it written down in the book.
Smith is not officially a winner, but as we all know, he did win at Talladega Superspeedway when Tony Stewart pushed him below the yellow line.
Smith has had zero top-fives and top-10s, but was running at the end of every race last season. He has an average finish over 28th and finished 34th in points last season.
9. David Stremme
Stremme is getting a chance most drivers do not get, a second chance and this time with a bigger team than before. He has 75 starts with only three top-10s he has signed to drive a Penske Dodge in '09 with Verizon as a sponsor.
However, Verizon will run no decals on the car due to Sprint's contract with NASCAR. This could be a one and done, meaning one year and out. My guess is that Justin Alligaer is in the No. 12 Cup team next year. I also do not see Stremme pulling out a win.
8. Travis Kvapil
After a two-year hiatus from NASCAR, Kvapil ran really surprisingly well in 2008. He recorded his first career pole and four of his six top-fives in the Cup Series and finished 24th in points.
This year, Yates Racing pulled his points and gave them to Paul Menard's No. 98 car that has a full sponsorship. Kvapil may not be able to get in on time, so I expect no win from him this year either.
7. Scott Riggs
With an average finish of 25th, and driving the newly formed Tommy Baldwin Racing car, never count Riggs out. He has four career Nationwide wins and five Truck Series wins.
He also only has four top-fives and 16 top-10s in Cup competition in 167 starts. It may take Baldwin more than a year to get his team in check, but Riggs is a strong pick for a win.
6.) Reed Sorenson
Sorenson was a contender in '05 for the Busch Series Title but finished fourth in the final standings. He is now in a Gillett Evernham Dodge in the renamed Richard Petty Motorsports.
He has five top-fives and 14 top-10s in 109 starts in the Cup Series. Sorenson does bring three wins in Busch Series competition and over 40 top-10s.
All his stats have been with Ganassi Racing which has been behind the curve since Sterling Marlin left the car in '05. Time will tell if his talent can turn out a win.
5. David Reutimann
The MWR standout is best known for his Truck Series Career. He has one win in both Trucks and Nationwide races. He only has four top-10 finishes in the Cup. Though I don't expect Reutimann to win, he will be competitive in the MWR Toyota next season.
4. Paul Menard
The off-season changed Menard's chances, moving from DEI to Yates Racing, the best thing he could have ever done.
Even though he only has one Nationwide win and a zero in the Cup win column, and actually only one top-five in his career, I expect him to win at least one race in 2009. Just look at Yates' track record. Championships and lots of wins, 58 to be exact.
3. Sam Hornish Jr.
Hornishes' first season is one he would rather forget about it. Even missing a race in '08, the three time Indy championship winner and 2006 Indy 500 winner is bound to win sometime his learning curve was difficult last year but he should have decent runs this year.
2. A.J Allmendinger
This highly talented racer has one non-points paying win at Charlotte in the All Star Showdown Race. He also has five wins in the Champ Car Series and 14 podium finishes.
However, he has only three top-10 finishes in the Cup Series after being bounced to the curb from Red Bull Racing and he is still unsure if he will have a ride for the full season in 2009. He signed to drive the first five races with RPM and is full of star talent.
1. David Ragan
Coming off a great season every one expects a 'W' in the win column for the former Driver X contest and Roush-Fenway Racing Team standout. He finished 14th in points, with eight top-fives and 17 top-10s in his career.
Everyone expects him to be a standout in 2009 and win a few races. He also finished fourth in Nationwide points in '08 and racing for Roush, he has got to win.
Lots of pressure on him also with Roush going down to four teams in 2010. If he doesn't win, he may be the odd man out.
These are my thoughts I don't think anyone will disagree with my No. 1 and Paul Menard may be ranked a little to high, but you have to look at the team's past performances also let me know your thoughts on this.
