College Football Recruiting 2013: Early Ranking of the Top 5 Recruiting Classes

Edwin WeathersbyJun 4, 2018

It's always fun, and even controversial, to rank recruiting classes. You can multiply that by 10 when you rank them early in the process, but at the end of the day, it's fun.

Today, I feel like having some fun, so I'm going to give you an early look and rank the top five recruiting classes for 2013 recruiting right now. Your favorite team might be on the list, or they might not.

So come see who's doing extremely well in early 2013 recruiting!

5. Ohio State

1 of 5

You knew Urban Meyer wouldn't waste time in 2013 recruiting. Meyer currently has seven commitments already, and six of them are 4-star prospects.

ATH Jalin Marshall, DB Eli Woodard and DB Cameron Burrows all are in the mix for 5-star status. Each of these three can be the sole headliner, and Meyer has gotten off to a great start.

Other names to watch in this class are DT Billy Price, RB Ezekiel Elliot and OL Evan Lisle.

4. Alabama

2 of 5

The Tide have put together some of the best recruiting classes ever assembled under Nick Saban, and 2013 is another step in that direction.

Saban has netted nine pledges for this year's class, with six recruits being at least 4-star status. The headliner plain and simple is 5-star LB Reuben Foster, the nation's No. 2 overall prospect.

RB Altee Tenpenny is an elite rock toter, OG Grant Hill will be a starter in the trenches in Tuscaloosa and TE OJ Howard is one of the most athletically gifted prospects in the country.

3. Florida

3 of 5

Florida started the year off with a bang in February and has picked up some great talent. The Gators hold 14 commitments and are getting after it on the trail this year.

The newest pledge is 4-star WR Ahmad Fulwood, one of the best prospects in Florida for 2013. LB Daniel McMillan is a future stud at LB, and I think you should expect big things from DT Caleb Brantley.

RB Kelvin Taylor is the son of former Gator Fred Taylor, and Nick Washington should develop into one of the better DBs in the SEC.

2. Michigan

4 of 5

16 players have already told Brady Hoke they will be playing in Ann Arbor in 2013. It's safe to say that Hoke has the recruiting at Michigan thing figured out, eh?

The top prospect and class headliner easily is QB Shane Morris, who's been committed to Big Blue for over a year now. DB Dymonte Thomas is one of the best players in the country in his own right.

LB Michael McCray is a stud second-level defender, and I absolutely love OG Patrick Kugler. Michigan is on pace for another top-six finish in 2013.

1. Texas

5 of 5

Look, Texas lone has nine players that are in the Scout.com top 100. That's fantastic, folks, and for that value, I give them the top nod for now in my opening 2013 recruiting class rankings.

Mack Brown and his staff always get an excellent jump on recruiting and use their backyard to saturate a prime portion of their roster each cycle.

The headliner is QB Tyrone Swoopes, with WR Ricky Seals-Jones on his heels for that honor. Other top names include OL Jake Raulerson, OL Kent Perkins, OL Darius James and DT A'Shawn Robinson.
